When you install another stick of RAM I know there are specs you have to match like the front buss voltage and PC series but I have someone telling me it has to be an exact match right down to manufacturer. Is this true?

No, the two sticks don't have to be from the same manufacturer. If you are talking about dual channel RAM, then it's always a good idea to buy identical sticks or twin packs which were made for dual channel RAM. But, if the memory is only going to run in single channel mode, motherboards aren't nearly as picky.

If you run two different speeds, like pc2100 and pc2700 when paired together they would only run at the slower of the two speed, and manual configuration would probably be needed.
If is old pc you may have trouble mixing memory.

If possible your best bet, for least troubles, would be to use same as already have.

What kind of memory do you have now?
What are the specs of the pc ?
