Sorry to ask what I'm sure is a very basic question, but I didn't see anything that pertained exactly to my situation and I don't want to goof anything up.

I have a dell dimension 4700. It currently as 512 of memory.

The computer has two sets of two slots...and one slot in each group holds the following: 256 mb 1rx16 PC2 - 32000-333-10-c1

I just picked up ONE of the following item from CompUSA and the sales guy was less than positive that this is what I need to upgrade my system to a 1G memory.

    Ram says: 512 mb ddr dimm q 64WQD P0126052
Package says: CompUSA brand pc3200/pc2700 ddr 400/333 512 mb ddr memory

Can I just insert this next to either 256 and thus be upgraded to my 1G memory? Or did I get the wrong item. Thanks.

Ps. let me apologize in advance. I also picked up a hard drive and a sound card. I'm sure I'll freak out and have a question about them as well. :)

    Your system needs ddr2

What you have bought is normal ddr,it should clearly say on the packaging ddr1 or ddr2 its the most important fact as the two types are completely uncompatible, for maximum compatibily its also recommended you get the same brand as currently installed this isnt necessary but limits the possibility of problems,of course if you can get it for around the same price:),this is the first store I found that sells genuine dell memory so shop around for cheaper :)

Thank you very much for the help. It figures. This was on sale for 29.99 and the guy said it should work, but I could tell that he really wasn't too knowledgable about this stuff.

I also had no idea that I should stick with the same brand if possible. Once again, this site has been an invaluable resource. :)
