Well I have about 640mb of DDR RAM installed in my system. I have one stick that is 128mb DDR and its a pc2100, the second stick is 512mb DDR and it's pc2700. Now I wanted to know a good RAM booster that you guys or girls might come across. My sistem for some reason is slowing down and it shouldn't because I have plenty of ram to run the machine. So I was wondering if anyone could help me on that problem. OH and yes, of course I scaned for spyware, adware, and viruses.

Hi, Is the ram comparable as they look different types to me and they might not work together.

Note when you run two differant speed's of memory in the same PC it will only run at the slowest of the two speeds.
In your case you have 640mb running at pc2100 speeds, Understand?

You say your PC has slowed down did you just add the 128mb of pc2100?
If so that may be the cause.
What is the FSB of your CPU, if your CPU has faster FSB that of your ram ya may be chocking your system.
You should run memory that matches the FSB of your CPU, or run memory that has higher FSB that the CPU.

how many processes are you running? are you sure one of those isn't the culprit ... ctrl-alt-del ... and in the process tab it will tell you how much use a particular process is taking from the CPU

www.outertech.com has a RAM tweaker that i like called cachemanXP ... it costs 25$ if you want the auto-optimize feature

I keep my startup pretty clean...I get rid of all the programs that I don't want to boot up with the famous "msconfig."

I am currently running a 1.7 Celeron Willamette with FSB at 99.6mhz and the bus speed is @398.4mhz with 128kb cache....

    What do you guys think...????

id say take out the 128mb stick out
its just slowing the processor and other ram down

I removed the 128mg DDR stick and I think it was a bit slower than when I had it in.....What could be the problem or is this normal....

what exactly is slow? it could be more than just your RAM

Well it takes for ever to boot up not like it use to when I first installed windows on my 60gb maxtor harddrive. Even when windows starts I have to wait for all 4 programs to load before I start.
    The following 4 Programs are
    1. Norton Anti-Virus 2003
    2. Norton Firewall 2003
    3. FreeRAM XP Pro
    4. Style XP

Now I was wondering could Style XP be the problem cause I know it takes lot of ram to run it that is the only reason I updated my ram. My mainboard supports pc2100. But when I first installed windows xp it didn't take for ever to load and I also had even more programs running before I started to clean up my startup.

try bootvis, it defrags your startup and gives you a detailed account of what is taking so long:

also a defragger like diskeeper or O&O Defrag are good ... I can only vauch for Diskeeper, it works alot better than the windows defragger

HI, I don't worry how long it takes to load up. I usually switch it on before I need it. Go to the toilet or make a drink. When you sit waiting for it to start it always seems a lot longer than it really is.

I know this does not correct your problem but it is still a good idea.

    I'd ditch Norton.
    Norton is a hog.
There are a few anti virus & firewall (free ones here at MG) that work better than Norton and they dont hog.

Only because it hasn't come back to bite you in the arse yet. hehe

Does it also take a while to shutdown? When was the last time you defraged your harddrive or cleaned out the Registry? If you've installed or uninstalled any programs lately, there could be some leftovers tying things up.

Try a good reputable Registry Cleaner. I use RegSupreme & it's not let me down yet. Very simple to use.

Well, that's not a bad idea for any of us, I know I'm too hyper and impatient sometimes. :)

But, I think we should try to fix the problem.

Let 's backup a bit. Can you list your Operating System, size of Hard Drive, Processor, etc? Let us know how much time, in minutes, it takes to boot up, shut down, or open an application. Also, like Pyrate said, see how many processes are running on your machine and let us know. If you are running XP, hit Ctrl Shift Esc to bring up the Task Manager and look at Processes: show All Users, and see how many you have going. This will also let you see how many Mhz of RAM each program and process is running, such as Style XP. Just curious, what does Norton run at? My AVG runs about 2 Mhz of RAM in the background, constant protection.

For reference, I usually have between 17 and 22 processes maximum running on my machine unless everyone is logged on and running programs.

Have a look at this page, too. you can jettison alot of baggage by going through all these steps.

Report back, and let's tweak this machine! :D

OK, I am running winXP with S/2. I am going to try to clean up my registry to see if that works, and as for the Windows Task Manager Norton is running a at 02 on the cpu and it takes 4,544k of mem usage to run. The only program that is taking alot of mem to run is firefox with 20,712k of mem usage just on itself. On second comes out styleXP I have to run the stylexp.exe and the stylexp service so it adds up to 30k of mem usage. As far as the program that is taking lots of CPU is System Idle Process that comes between 88 to 91 in the Task Manager.

thankyou all that are helping me I really appricilated....

I got a question for SuesMan about RegSupreme. Which of the registry entries do I delete.

    I get

    Useless empty key
    Obsolete software entry
    Useless file extencion

I could handle the rest of the registry entries but I don't know what this ones mean, do I just delete them too....

    Your welcome!
Sorry! I didnt mean to rub ya the wrong way.
Maybe sometimes I have bad sense of hummer, bad spelling too on occasion.

If you like Norton you should keep it, never the less it is slowing your system, regardless what you think.

You have recieved some good advice from several posters, including mine.

I feeling generous tonight, there may be some tweaks you can make in bios that may help too, here is bios guide to assist:

I was just reading another thread ya posted, you just updated your bios?
Generally when you flash Bios, your bios settings return to thier default settings.
Default setting's are not usually the best settings or best performance settings.

Last thought, A new gig of ram? are you selling the old? PM me.
    Good night!
