I am dealing with lots of old donated systems, mostly legacy, I am having trouble keeping all the different types ram modules sorted out. Is there a site that I can visit to make me a Ram expert? How can I tell what size the modulr is, what speed it runs, and if it is a simm, dimm, or rimm? also if it is sd, ddr, or rambus? I need to get memory savvy as soon as possible. Most of the stuff we take apart has long lost any ID markings. So who is the expert out there?

SDRAM has 2 notches: one kinda off center and the second about an inch +/- from the end. DDR has one notch kinda off center. Most RIMM (also called RAMBUS) usually has two notches, both near the center about an inch apart. I have seen some OEM RIMM with only one notch (made by Gateway). RIMM is fairly uncommon as it is very picky, very expensive, and must be run in pairs and therefore never really got that popular. Most older PC's (the ones worth fixing anyway) will be running SDRAM which usually has the speed and MB capacity on a sticker. If the PC has short memory sticks (less than 4 inches or so and one rounded notch in the center) it's really old and not worth investing any time or trouble into it unless all you want to do is play solitaire or type in WordPad. This type is called EDO RAM or 72pin SIMMs. Any PC less than 3-4 years will probably use DDR. Some motherboards will have both type of slots, DDR and SDRAM (mine does but it's a bit older). In this case, you can NOT use both types at the same time! Experience is the best teacher my friend, but www.crucial.com has a tool where you can enter the make/model of a PC in question and it will show you the recommended type of RAM.... If you have any questions, feel free to post again!

first of all, there is no link on this website at least on the Homepage for a NEW post>>>>where the hell is it??

secondly, I am looking 4 a website that will tell me what type/brand of memory I have that is NOT specifically labeled by the company>>>I have searched under "memory type" "memory identifier" memory manufacturer etc to no avail. there has GOTTA be a website that can help me identify the maker of my PC3200 memory sticks.

    thnx, bo bo bolinski

PS: particularly interested in how to post a new thread>>I have this problem every time i visit this website. that option should be front and center on the home page or the Forum page but I sure can't see it??
