What happens if you exceed the maximum memory that a slot can take? My old computer has a maximum 256mb ram (i.e. 128 per slot) and there's a 256stick in slot 0 and 128 in slot 1. Should I replace the 256 stick with a 128 or will it work just the same?

So you have 384mb of ram & the pc only see's 256 & you know the PC only supports 128mb per slot.

If thats the case dont waste any money on another stick of 128 the end result is the same

    OK, Thanks.
The reason I was asking is that Belarc is showing that the slot with the 256 stick in it has only 1MB and the other slot with the 128 stick is 128MB. So I was just wondering if the 256 stick is being used to full advantage. (I don't understand this memory stuff).

If Belarc is seeing only 1mb that could be a problem. That could just be flaw with belarc

What about BIOS does it see your memory? or atleast 128 per slot?

If Bios cant see it as at least what the slot supports then might look for a stick of memory of size thats recommended

    Check out www.crucial.com.
It is an on-line service that will check out your PC and recommend RAM to fit and mother board limitations (if any, I think). Bazza
