    Hey guys

Me and my brother wanted to play command and conquer generals on our lan against eachover, after doing this both of our computers allow the games .exe to slowley use up all of our ram until it totally crashes, and we have 4gig each. We tryed online vs eachover, ip conflict.. :cry

After alot of googling, Its been said that its a problem with the game and has never been patched and probably never will.

I have used a program to limit cpu usage on a game and it worked months ago but had nothing to do with ram usage, I tryed finding something to limit the ram and had no such luck, just scams and near misses with malware.

My question is this, does anyone know a trusted program that can limit ram usage on certain .exes? it cant be done ingame, and i have tryed lowering the priority of the process it got me another 2 mins of gameplay lol, I realy love this game and can play for hours singleplayer without problems! any help will be appreciated! thx guys

32-bit? I've used CleanMem with great success, ensure you have a big (4092MB) swapfile - it's a 'general' program though, can't be used on a single exe.

64-bit? I've used a program called RAMfree from error-soft.net, you need to register to gain access, the guy's a Brit, based in the UK and I consider his work to be safe. It works on any window(s) you select, whether it's hidden from Windows or not!

Sorry I am not too sure if I am 32 or 64, I install programs as 32bit usually but My Computer/General reads dual core 64bit, I can't remember what OS I installed, all i know is that its windows xp, I was hoping for something that will target the game's process :(

If XP then you're probably running 32-bit, if you had 64-bit XP, I think you'd probably know; press the Windows key + Pause/Break at the same time, you should get a popup window with fuller details to be sure.

CleanMem is very good, I tested so many in my time running puny PC's on XP and it's the best one out there (most others are not even worth downloading).

I don't have any other processes that creep up/leak in memory usage, if I used cleanmem will this possible stop the game's exe from leaking aswel as others?

I tryed pressing the windows key + pause/break, nothing happened lol

    Whats a swapfile btw?

Right click My Computer and hit Properties. It should state system information in the General tab.

Swapfile, paging file, virtual memory are the same thing, an area on the drive that Windows uses to dump the contents of RAM that's not been used for a time. I always set mine to 4092MB min and max, saves Windows slowing to a crawl for minutes at a time and popping up complaining messages when it's set to default and RAM usage is high.

Set your pagfile/swapfile/virtual memory manually try out your game. Then install CleanMem, test it for yourself - it's the only way.

What's the reasoning behind using 4092mb min and max? Do you match your RAM or trial and error or ......

Basically, 4092MB is the largest pagefile that can be used by all recent Windows versions, if you have 64-bit or Server versions on NTFS, you can use much larger settings.

Please don't give me the MSFT line about what they consider to be the most effective setting - for heavy duty 3rd party gaming, the gamer knows best ;) I tested many variations on the theme over several years and many machines, once you start running big games and have GB's of RAM in use, allow 4GB for swapfile. If you have 2 hard drives, give the 2nd drive 4GB and set the Windows drive to less, 200MB up to 1GB or so - it's really only there in case of a crash to store the minidumps.
