    I have a toshiba A205, intel T2370 dual core, 1024MB PC5300 DDR2 SDRAM

What will increasing the RAM do for me?

    Any suggestions on brand differences?

    thanx

What's the purpose of the upgrade?

Well, right after purchasing this one, they all started coming out with 2G ram, with the same processor, I'm not bummed at all because they're 150 bucks more than mine, to which I can easily upgrade my ram for about half that, from what I've seen shopping.
I surf a lot, will it help me there, I also fold. Was thinking about trying my hand at some photoshopping and auto-cad, just for play tho, one thing I don't do is gaming, no good at it :(

    thanx again

Photoshop likes the RAM! I would upgrade to 2 GB or more (depending on the mobo and OS). Two gigs is a pretty good amount now.

Well I here Vista is resource hungry (XP here) and if you start using Auto-cad and photo-shop you will notice benefits from the extra RAM. Ideally you increase your RAM for multitasking potential and for resource hungry applications (2 you have mentioned).

Personally I would get as much info about your RAM to start with using:

    EVEREST

Take note of the brand, but importantly the "Memory Timings" written like 4-4-4-12, under Motherboard>>>>SPD, and try and make sure any new modules match up with those timings and have the same speed.

Then you can use a memory advisory site like Crucial:

    http://www.crucial.com/

If you can match up the numbers you should be okay.

You may also want to check out your specific model of A205:

Thanks guys, i'll get that info from your links and go from there, I have the toshiba site bookmarked, I'll post back if I have any more questions,

OK, I installed everest, but it didn't support my processor, it didn't recognize the type of motherboard, and the SPD came up blank, I think it's because I bought such a "base" laptop, it was only $450 after all. It did say I was using 67- 71% of my ram

So, I checked out the crucial link, they offer a 2G kit for $59, which according to them is the max my machine can handle.

So, the next question would be, brand comparisons, is kingston as good, I can get the 2G kit locally for the same price,

    Thanx again

I have a Toshiba A205 that came with 2 Gigs. Its pretty quick. I also prefer Crucial, used them on every PC I've upgraded thus far. Kingston is not as good IMO, just too generic.

You don't need anything to tell how much ram is used. Press CTRL ALT DEL for task manager, performance tab.

Personally I think Crucial make some of the best RAM in the world across all market areas. Would still try and resolve exactly which model of A205 you have (there is like a dozen on their site) and look at the specific specs on your system, making sure it will handle the RAM etc etc. You could probably google the serial number on the bottom or open "Windows+r" and type DXdiag....see if this gives you better info for system info.

Oh, I used that to find the right one at the crucial site, it's an A205-S585,

    They said # CT826038-- $59,

I've searched around and it seems you are not the only one that likes crucial, so I'll go with them, I want what's best for the money, not what's convienant.

    Thanks again guys :cool

Hmmm on the site there is A205-S585 (1,2,3,5,9???)

Here's a guide that might help:

    Have a good read firstly.

Well their RAM is slightly faster than what you have but that should be fine (imho always good to have slightly faster RAM and underclock it, gives you more head room later for any OC) hopefully the Volts will be okay. Have you ever had a look in the BIOS and noted whether you can change the Voltage if you have to? May be worth having a look in the BIOS under "Advanced Chipset Functions" or something to that affect and see whether you have the option to change Memory VCore? Your and my BIOS will be different and this is probably unnecessary but worth making sure in case you need the contingency plan.
