  1. Hi guys,
I was wondering if anybody has suggestions on a prog, that can free up RAM? I was checking out FreeRAM,(I'm running windows 98). I've got 512megs of RAM,but you can never get enought.

  2. Thanks star17.
I was also wondering how safe are these types of progs? Can they do any damage?

actually you have the max amount that an operating system like windows 98 will handle with no problems.

The operating system itself will use 128 megs thus the reason why windows 98 has to be rebooted more often than windows xp.

If you install more than 512 megs on a windows 98 computer you might run into problems. there is a tweak that you can use that will allow you to install about 712 megs but beyond that windows will definately become unstable
I read a post once where a guy was running 1 gig of ram on a windows 98 operating system. his computer kept freezing and not working. taking out one stick of ram solved the problem.

with the amount of memory you have. You have more than enough for an operating system like windows 98. I am not sure running a memory management program will make any difference.

  4. Hi endiablado, I don't want to add more RAM, I just want to free it up.

    My experience has been

that it will not help a wit. I run Win ME. My computer has three memory slots. I had two sticks of 256 (512) and it ran great, but I wanted more so I added another stick of 64M, tweaked it and had many problems just as Endi said. I removed the 64M, installed a proggy that was supposed to "free up" RAM, and it made very little difference. The way I finally freed up as much RAM as possible was by trimming down my start up programs and killing off unnecessary programs running in the background. I also got rid of the proggy that I had installed. You can look at your start up programs by: start>Run> type in msconfig, hit enter>start up tab. Uncheck any that are not necessary and restart your box. If you do not know what a certain program is ask first!!!

If you read my post carefully. it states that a program to manage memory will do no good. of course this is just my opinion

If you had 128 or 64 megs then a memory management program might be able to help you a bit. (I doubt it)

I am running windows xp pro and have 700 megs of ram. I have yet to have any memory problems with my computer.

Your windows 98 with 512 megs of ram is optimal and there is no need for no program to free up ram.

what can help you is making sure that you are not running to many tasks at one time and that your startup programs are only the ones you really need

for instance. you do not need fake player (sorry I mean real player) running at all times or qucktime, or windows media player or any other program that feels it needs to be resident in the memory at all times that what really slows down a computer. too many programs that think they should be running while you do not need them
    :)

The only programs that should be running on your taskbar are your firewall and your antivirus. the rest should be removed from the start configuration

where can I access these start up processes on windows XP?

    start
    run
    type services.msc

also if you want to know which to disable then go to

    http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

or for the startup programs type

msconfig and then click on the startup tab

I suggest before you do that

make sure that the program you are tying to prevent from starting check to see if the program itself gives you the option of disabling it:D

    Free up RAM in Win98

Hi, My laptop is maxed out at 288mb of RAM. I have W98SE installed. I use Maxmem from www.analogx.com . When I bootup Maxmem reports 51% free. Run it once and free goes to 78% free. 98 is not good at memory management according to MG posts and other sources.
I am happy with Maxmem although it sometimes has the annoying habit of running when you would prefer it not to, which sometimes is a pain in the #$%. There are 3 setting levels for different intensities of freeing up memory. Aggresive is the most aggresive (strange that) and takes the longest to run. You can alter/set the % levels that you want each of the 3 settings to kick in at. Baz

  10. Thanks a lot guys,
I'll keep your opinions in mind for when (or if) I try something.
