yeah, a great and very useful tool is at Crucial in the form of their Memory Advisor Tool it scans your PC and advise's the best memory and how much you can install, even if you don't buy from them its worth printing out the info so you can go hunt for the right spec memory.

edit: the scanner thing is here http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/ the above part is where you can manually search by entering the info asked for.

Great advice, and great link, Halo.

One query, though, why didn't Zone Alarm warn me that someone, in this case harmless, was trying to access my system? Bazza

most likely as you had given it access by clicking the ActiveX popup, if using XP or by generally opening the page yourself, if you have MS antispyware installed it adds an extra level of protection as it pops up a small window asking you if you want to allow this activeX prog for approval.

I've given up on my dualboot W98SE/XP Pro laptop for the moment. I'm using W98SE on a P3 desktop. I don't have MS antispyware installed. Not sure what you mean by "clicking the ActiveX popup"? I've checked all the tabs in ZA and can't find any reference to it. Bazza

I dont think that win98 would warn you to anything being installed as a result of you clicking a link, whereas XP would in the form of a dropdown menu under the address bar alerting you to an app wanting to install.

you could check this location to see if an ActiveX app was installed by Crucial, depending if you actuall use the scan or if you only used the advisor tool then nothing would have been installed...

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and called Crucialcpcscan

ZA wouldnt have a listing in its program list as you would have said yes to allowing the app through IE. On the otherhand MS Antispyware would alert you to ActiveX apps being installed.

Halo, thanks for the reply. Does MS Antispyware work with W98SE? I prefer to run as little MS software as I can, except for the OS, of course, and Office and IE. :D ;)
And on it goes. One day I'll experiment with Open Office and Firefox, and stuff.
Just a personal prejudice of mine. Gotta keep on taking the tablets. Bazza
