Is it theoretically possible to eliminate the hard drive and store all your data in RAM, that is if anyone could afford so much RAM? Would there be problems managing that much memory?

Theoreticaly it is possible to store all of your programs on flash memory like a pda.

Also Knoppix is a version of linux that can boot with out a hard drive.

There is a product called I-RAM that goes in your PCI slot and hooks up to a SATA connector, it lets you add up to 4gb of RAM that cna be used as storage, it is great for storing an OS, some guy made a video of it rebooting windows XP in 25 seconds.

yes, but with current ram you would need hardware items like the I-RAM solution, not very cost effective. Other alternatives have been around for a while in Flash Ram as used in Cameras, PDAs etc

SSDs ( Solid State Disks ) have been around for a while but not in sizes to easily accomodate a full OS an dsoftware, however NAND technologhy flash drives are emerging, especially as Samsung have a 32gb model ( NAND if you didnt know.. has no moving parts unlike the HD your using now, so less to go wrong, plus faster access times ) http://www.bit-tech.net/news/2006/03/21/samsung_32gb_nand_flash_hard_drive/

Won't solid state storage require a 24/7 power supply?

It recieves a little bit of power as long as the PC is plugged in and has a 12 hour back up battery(lithium)

I just checked and found that the size of my Windows folder is 3.44 Gbs. Would I be able to put all of that into the SSD, boot from the SSD and increase overall speed?

yes, it supports up to 4gb of RAM.

BTW my OS size is 3.44 but the size on the disk is only 2.77. Is the remaining in the RAM?

No Solid State technology is the similar as the little media cards you use for a digital camera.

    some more info

But if we go that direction with power requirements then RAM requires perminent power and a PC to be on 24/7 as it is Volatile ( power goes out or you turn/reboot your pc the data is lost ) opposed to SSDs which are non-volatile ( power out/reboot data is safe )

yes as NAND SSDs as in the link I earlier and above provided, now that Samsung have produced 32GB NAND drives, these are to replace in the future current rotary HDs... cost of a NAND HD.. dunno off hand, but not cheap :)

bare in mind the SSDs I'm refering to that allow an OS to be installed are not the same as the digital media cards you can buy for digital cameras, altho the tech is similar.... they dont have the capacity's and current hardware ( mobos/bios ) dont AFAIK boot to media cards.
