Hi. After running a system recovery, I have no sound. I spent alot of time (as did Musksnipe MG) trying to fix the problem. I moved the post to drivers forums today. Besides having no sound, in Device Mgr, the SB PCI512 and all its components are "functioning normally". So I checked the SB Audio HQ and it says ther are No devices. I have downloaded the driver for Realtek AC97 and made sure in BIOS that it was enabled. No sound. (Realtek came with the computer and after the cable guy installed a new modem, Ithink the chipset was damaged- NO Sound). I disabled Realtek in BIOS (onboard sound). Installed SB PCI512 soundcard and turned the pc on. It recognized the new HW and then I downloaded the driver-No Sound. I did this 3 times- no sound. Musksnipe gave me some other routes to try, which I did w/o success. So that is it in a nutshell. I will attach the Everest Report as soon as I figure out how to remove it from the other post which I am trying toclose or delete. By the way, Musksnipe MG is the man. he worked his tail off on this. Much thanks, griffer

Have you tried the SB sound card in a different PC? There is a chance that both the onboard sound and the SB card are faulty....

Mornin' dlb. I have not tried the sb sc in another computer, but I did by a 2nd sc(Xtreme Sound). I had the same problem with it. What I am thinking now is that an update may be keeping the driver from loading. I watched the screen yesterday when I reinstalled the SB driver. It skipped over the MIDI Sequencer and the Sound Wave (?) installations. Since I ran Sys Rec, I figure the update was added after the initial installation of SB. I am going to try and figure out which update may be causing the problem. Any suggestions for that? Thanks for the reply and the info. I'll keep you updated if you want me to. griffer

Don't know if this wll help you or not,
Two devices have been assigned the same input/output (I/O) ports, the same interrupt, or the same Direct Memory Access channel. The assignment was made by either the basic input/output system (BIOS), the operating system, or a combination of the two.
This error message can also appear if the BIOS did not allocate enough resources to the device. You can use Device Manager to determine where the conflict is and disable the conflicting device.

Goto Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, choose the Hardware tab, choose Media Control Devices, click Properties, then the Properties tab in the new window, choose (MCI) MIDI Sequencer, click Properties, then finally Settings.
In Sound Playback is your Card the Default Device?

I ran system recovery again. Now I have sound. Thanks to you guys for all the time you've given to my problem. New problem!! I deleted Windows XP sp2. I have down loaded the set up boot floppy discs (6 in total). How do I get the computer to read the discs? Any thoughts or ideas would be great. griffer

Since this is a new problem, a new thread is probably the best way to go.... but..... I'm not sure I understand what you're saying here. You ran a system recovery and the sound now works. But SP2 has been deleted? How'd that happen? You don't need the floppy disks for anything. All they have are some start up files that really aren't going to help your situation. If you think about it, floppies only hold a maximum of 1.44mb per disk, so you have 6.... 1.44mb x 6 = 8.64mb which clearly isn't even close to large enough to install anything, let alone SP2 (which is about 260mb). You can download the SP2 install .EXE from Microsoft. When the download finishes, just double click the file. For best results, download it directly to your root directory (for example, put it directly on C:\ and not in My Documents or on your desktop). Here's the link:

    Good luck!

If you have any more problems, start a new thread and link to this thread in the new one. You'll get better (and quicker and more accurate) help that way. ;)
