Hello, I have a Gateway Tablet PC XP SP2 which I have owned for almost a year.

Since the beginning the computer has been freezing randomly - and then it requires a hard re-boot (ie the cursor moves erratically and wherever it touches goes blank).

I also get a box on the screen with a large red "X" in it - but, until today, nothing else is visible.

Today is said only "Runtime Error" and in the task bar it said "MS Visual". As soon as it touched it with the cursor, it went blank.

I've disabled all services with msconfig except ZoneALarm and the touchpad helper. Everything else is off.

I have run an Everest Report and I can attach it if your think it would help. Please advise if there are any other logs that I can provide.

The freezing is totally random and does not appear to be tied in to any particular program that I can identify.

    Any assistance would be appreciated.

    Hi

Quickish thing to test and as its random the freezing is that if the Tablet PC has cooling vents and fans, is that are they all free from dust, as dust creates heat quickly in laptops/Tablets and will cause random freezing and reboots, plus software glitches?

As you have Everest, monitor your temps and post what they are like after say 10mins of use then 30mins and then a few hours, just wish to see if the temps are stable or rising to a point in which it may cause these issues.

    Thanks Halo. Shall do.

I should add that the computer usually freezes after a period of time when it's NOT in use - ie I just come back to it and it's frozen.

Halo, it just froze solid again after 2 hours on non-use.

    Error was:

" The instruction at 0x004148d3 referenced memory at 0x00000000. The Memory could not be read"

    Heat now:
    CPU 120F
    HD 102F

    Earlier this evening:
    CPU 111F
    HD 100F

Please advise if there is any further information you need or any further suggestions for troubleshooting.

    Thanks,
    AK

Just a bit more info - I do not notice the fans running on when the computer is behaving normally. They come on and go off properly it seems. However, when the computer hangs, the fans do run on trying to dissipate the heat. I'm thinking it's a software issue - some glitch is causing the computer to freeze, and then it heats up because it hangs.

As noted earlier, all services (except Zone Alarm and the track pad helper) have been disabled.

Is there any log file that we can look to which would tell us what is causing it to hang?

    Thx

Another freeze today while using IE.

Is there a log I can refer to to try and discover the issue?
