a friend of mine has been using iTunes on her dell PC for the past few weeks. she just does the usual stuff, purchases a few songs a week on it, listens to them all occasionally using iTunes, and uploads them to her ipod shuffle or whatever its called every once in awhile.

now my question is this, she wants to borrow some CDs i have to burn songs onto her computer. i have zero experience with iTunes so im sure this will sound stupid, but does iTunes play regular mp3 files or do they need to be something different? I figure i will probably just burn the cd on my computer and give them to her on a flashdrive.

also, i don't want her getting in trouble anytime soon, and i've heard that iTunes "shares" your playlist with everyone else, so i'm wondering, is it safe for her to use iTunes to play music that i give her from my cds? and if it isnt, is there a way she can listen to the music and still be able to upload it to her ipod shuffle? hope this wasnt too confusing

No worries, we all can be confused from time to time :)

    Luckily music is my "experteese"!!!

With iTunes, if you put the cd in the drive, the songs will show up in iTunes and you can import them to your library and then put them over to your iPod, just like you would with the files that were purchased.
I'm sure you can uncheck an option to share your playlist if you go through the options, sorry I don't have it up right now so can't point you in the right direction, but hope I've been of some assistance :)

Itunes and iPods play MP3s as well as Apples AAC format. Itunes is set to import CD music in the AAC format, but that can be changed in Preferences if your friend prefers MP3 format. They will not play WMA files, though it can convert them if necessary. The sharing feature is off by default, she would have to turn it on in preferences.
