Random settings change

So, sometimes settings seem to just randomly change. Like today, I noticed my monitor was asleep... Odd, it hasn't been set to go to sleep in months. Sure enough, I went into power settings, and it said it was set to turn off after 20 minutes. I really have no idea why or how it was changed. I know for a fact that I haven't entered power settings in months.

I've also noticed performance seeming to degrade in certain areas, but I doubt that's related.

Does anyone have any ideas why changes like this could just... happen?

It's a wild guess, but it may have something to do with Acronis. Since I now use the boot disk to do my mirrors rather than the program from Windows, I don't really even have a need for it to be installed. I thought, instead of uninstalling it completely, I'd leave it on the hard drive, and just keep it from running and using up resources other than disk space, so I opened up WinPatrol and disabled all of the Acronis stuff, except for the services, because I had forgotten about those. I later thought that may not be a good idea, I'm not really sure what all those items do and whether or not it might mess something up to just disable them in WinPatrol, so I re-enabled them. I don't see how that would have changed anything, unless somehow I inadvertently caused try and decide or something along those lines to change something.

Anyhow, would it hurt to just disable all of the Acronis startup items and services? I really don't need them, but since I'm not sure how they work or what all they do/have done, I'm just not sure. Or would it really just not make any sense to keep it on the hard drive at all?

If you created a recovery CD through Acronis, and tested at bootup to see that it works - it will load the program into RAM, then it is safe to uninstall the entire Acronis program becasue the CD can be use to run the program. I use my CD to create a backup either on CDs, DVDs or to my external hd, verify the image made and restore an image.

I have the original Acronis disk, and have been using it to mirror my drive to a second drive as a backup, which I'm assuming is the same as what you're talking about. I definitely wouldn't uninstall Acronis without the possibility of reinstalling or using the program again.

I'm still unsure how the setting got changed... I haven't touched any power settings in months. Probably a half a year or better.

I'm not sure we are talking about the same thing. The CD I'm referring to is a recovery CD that you create and burn through the Acronis program. It is NOT the program CD.
I have both a recovery CD and a set of 6 recovery floppies that I created through the Acronis program.

I'm not sure we're talking about the same thing either. Seems like the only thing similar I can find to make in the program is a Bootable Recovery Media, but I believe that the disk that I have is basically the same thing.

    The Create Bootable Media option?

I'm not sure, but if I'm able to create this disk in the program, and I have the install disk, then I could always reinstall it to create this disk. So, either way, I don't think I'm really permanently loosing anything.

Yes, Create bootable rescue media is the item. After you have your rescue media, you can uninstall TI and its services and still be able to do backups and restores without having the program installed on your computer.

I can do this with the disk that I have, even though it may not be exactly the same, so I think I will just uninstall. Thanks. I'm still curious as to why the settings changed, I honestly don't have any idea why it'd do that... I guess it's not that important as simple as it is to change.

No one does. Files get corrupted. Settings get changed. You read all the time people have to repair windows.
If we knew what was changing things, we wouldn't let it happen. ;)
Some things I want changed permanently (and select it) and yet can't figure out what magic thing I need to do to make it happen because the next time, the setting is back to the way the computer likes it, not me!

Well... I knew that was true, I guess I just never really thought of it having the effect or changing the things that it has.

Now that I think about it, I guess it's kind of one of those "duh" things. lol. thanks
