Hi Folks, I'm new to the forums so go easy on me!

I'm having a bit of an issue with my new PC build wanting to turn itself off. This doesn't happen randomly, it happens when either playing a game or when i'm using the UDK.

My system specs are as follows:
    - ASUS M4N68T V2 Motherboard
    - AMD Phenom II X4 850
    - 6GIG Kingston KVR RAM (2GIG x3)
    - WinPower +Plus Powerful and Silent PSU (http://www.bossecomputers.co.uk/acatalog/info_PSU_703.html)
    - Nvidia GTX 285
    - 1TB SATA HD
    - Running Win7

A couple of things I have noticed is that the temperatures of my CPU and GPU do not show any signs of overheating. I recorded the temps for both at the exact times of the shutdown and the CPU was at 77C and the GPU was at 65C.

I ran a Blend test in Prime95 which seemed to pass, so (unless the test was a bit dodgy) I don't think it's a RAM issue.

In addition to this, i've also flashed my BIOS to the latest configuration.

So, in conclusion I think there might be something up with my power supply- however the reason i'm here is to get an even more professional opinion :)

    Hope you can help!

    Cheers.

When you say shutdown, does it just immediately power off or sort of freeze then shutdown?

Have you tried reinstalling any GFX related drivers ect?

What makes you think its the power supply? Just the next probable cause? I presume you don't have a spare PSU to try?

What happens is whenever I'm playing a game or doing some kind of 3D graphics work- as soon as I experience a major drop in FPS the power will just cut off. No freezes or any kind of delay, just an immediate cut off.

Yes, I've updated the GFX drivers (even tried beta drivers) but still no luck!

Unfortunately I don't have a spare PSU to try- I was just wondering if it was faulty (i.e. forcing too many volts through? :confused)... I'm not sure.

My thinking is the voltage may be fine on inspection which is why the computer runs OK. As you stress the PC, the PSU may not be able to keep up with the extra current draw.

ONLY if you feel comfortable and competent to do so you could try get a meter and check the voltages if not a PSU tester... Otherwise I think the first thing to do is to swap out the PSU (maybe borrow one!?) and try replicate the shutdown, THEN if that's not the issue my thinking is the GFX card.

You could try running a video diagnostic program but if the PSU is the issue it could throw you off.

Ok, thanks for that! I'll see if I can get hold of a PSU to test it with and get back to you.

If it is my GFX card then I guess that gives me an excuse to upgrade before Battlefield 3 releases!

    Cheers.

    Hi,

Update on the situation. After swapping out the PSU for another and replacing my CPU (just to be sure- had a spare one lying around), the problem still persists. Could this be a software issue rather than hardware?

All of my gfx drivers have been updates to the latest version and I've flashed the bios just to be sure.

Weird thing is, I can spend all day using modelling software (3ds Max), but as soon as I run a game (Skyrim for example) it will shutdown within 10 or so mins.

    Any ideas? I'm clueless :confused

    Cheers
