Now before anyone reads this one, it is not for the faint of heart, those who get infected with viruses constantly, or slip in the bathtub a lot.

I'm expecting hate for this one, but keep in mind my subject:

Switching to Linux or OS X from Windows (because of viruses) hides your own shortcomings. I'm fully aware there are those who are less computer savvy that malware authors target. This blog is NOT directed towards them, but those who switch to another OS and blame Windows for their problems.

Only reason that I use Ubuntu(it's easy to set up though I'm sure most *nix distros would be good too) is that even under the extra overhead of running a *nix in VM, it's still faster than native Windows by %20 for folding.

It looks like a decent OS and is fairly easy to get to know, unfortunately the GPU makers don't give out their code which is what I care about. Wine ain't so hot for my needs.:)

They don't realize that Windows is NOT prone to viruses. It's just a bigger and more high-profile OS that is easier for malware writers to score against.
Other OS's seem immune because not as many people use them. Malware writers go to the place where they have a better chance based on numbers.

That is frighteningly similar to what I've been telling my friends for over a year now. They're NOT immune. They're just not targeted.

Congratulations, you're in the ignored minority. LOL

I LOVE that analogy. Absolutely beautiful! :)

that's true about Mac and although i plan to get one, eventually, i don't plan on NOT having any security software. people who say Mac's CAN'T get any infections are not basing it on anything except that it's not as big a target as MS. if it ever surpassed MS, they'd come out of the woodwork like an infestation of termites.

    Agreed on all posts above.

I am certain there are Mac viruses/trojans. I have one on my hard drive right now (purposely put there and zipped :p) that deletes your data and masquerades as a game.

Every time you score, it deletes more data :p

I think I saw someone post a link to that a week or two ago here. So there's a Mac versh too eh?:-D

    Hi Adryn

Agreed with your rant, and I know I have been saying this for years, as not only is jumping OS but jumping browsers not going to help you either. Have seen this many times in the malware forum, "I have a virus/trojan infection but I dont use that crappy IE but use Firefox always, please help" Fx wont help the warez, music, films et al that you download or things you download from p2p.

Jailbroken iPhones have a virus now as its a popular phone so gets the attention of the malware writers, and Firefox will be getting sustained attacks into its code now as its % share of the browser market is gaining on IE, and being OpenSource code over Closed code its ripe for some future big attacks as the extention add-ons are an accident waiting to happen, already been at start of this year some malware redirect infection that lurked in the extentions folder.

As I've mentioned in many threads on security its the end user thats the biggest help or hinderance to PC security, in how they practice safe computing or not.

If by writing style, you mean condescending, rude, and sarcastic, thanks :-D

I can only properly express myself through words. Otherwise I end up yelling.

i DEFINITELY agree with all the posts. personally i have good security software & surfing habits. i use Firefox mainly because i just like how it works. i do have some security/privacy addons, but only really rely on my really good security suite and common sense to avoid any infections.

since i've only ever had 1 drive-by infection (was in October, with my former crappy security suite) in YEARS i have to assume I am the reason, not Firefox, that i don't seem to have any problems.

http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-angry018.gif I agree with the posts also... IE, FF, or Opera... Doesn't really matter what browser you are using, but HOW you use it that matters.. Also, is someone is not using AV, and they get infected, is it really fair to blame IE or FF or Opera for ones own stupidity? I think not... Yes, viruses are self inflicted, for sure, I agree 100% with that one especially... ;)

I have been thinking of changing to Linux for some time now and NOT because of the Virus/Malware factor but because of all the patches and repair updates and other annoying things that cram your pc full of crap to slow it down. Not saying Linux doesn't have them I just haven't heard of them from Linux ops as much. Eventually it(virus) will start there(Linux) as soon as it starts to populate just like the others(micro.,etc) by then who knows what will be out there. I do my honest best to make sure am safe and I agree, not to change just to get away from the nasties. It follows the Crowd. and if theres a bored, angry, disgruntle, intelligent geek type person ,then there is a virus program in the making

Ya, look at Ubuntu 9.10 that was just released last week, %20 upgrade/install failure rate. That was a major gaffe to say the least! I only run it in VM which runs 1 program(F@H) so if KK screws up, I really don't care much and I'll just reinstall 9.04 but I would get easily lost doing something like compiling and I had expert help to guide me through it. It's getting close to being ready for primetime but not just yet.

I have just installed Ubuntu on a VM machine and the first thing it asked was "there are 221 updates available".

Yep but i find it runs better than the new one, it is 14 min per % at the moment.

I have just put it back on folding.

Just wait Augie until i build the i7 rig then hopefully we will see some fireworks.

I am going to use an i7 960 with an ASUS Rampage II Extreme Deluxe or a Foxconn Renaissance.
