So a friend was fixing a computer and doing some work at a condo. This person decided they wanted to stream NetFlix via a Blu-Ray player in the bedroom with the router being almost as far as possible from the player. Of course this was a condo so you you have the typical signal problems (at least 5 strong other signals just from other wi-fi) PLUS distance making it a lose lose situation.

Here is why I don't repair computers for people as a living:

I made 3 suggestions as it was seeing 36% signal but not connecting:

1: Change the router channel to 6. This worked, it now connects at about 36% signal.
2: Get a repeater (my least favorite because its additional power, connection and wires.
3: Best answer: Fish a cat 5 cable up, hide it behind the crown molding and fish behind the DVD player. NOTHING beats a wired connection, especially for heavy bandwidth use.

Customer looks at him like he is an idiot (you know the genius that can't even log into a router and change the channel) and says she hates wires. Really? So I guess she will be removing every wire behind the walls powering everything in the house next?

Enjoy streaming at 36% signal in the evening when everyone else is doing the samel

Lesson; If you are not computer savvy, try to listen to the advice you get.

    Rant off.

Hey, it's their choice eh? As long as your friend got paid so screw the rest of the crap. You just care too much I think.;)

It's frustrating. Perfect example are some of the people that come here for help because they are clueless and then proceed to argue with those that are trying to help them. Well, if you know better or don't want to bother with the advice given, why'd you ask for help in the first place?

This is so true man. I got one for you.

When I started at the place I work now about 3 years ago, a team of auditors were heading to Canada from Texas for about 2 weeks for a job. He brought his machine to me complaining of slowness and getting tons of error messages from windows. Well, I was able to get around most of the things, but I just felt like I needed to do more diagnostics. I told him this, but he said he needed his computer now to finish up some work, and that he promised to bring it by before heading out of the country. Again, I told him that I STRONGLY recommended to see me and have me perform some indepth diagnostics of his computer BEFORE leaving for Canada as I believed his Harddrive might be failing.

So what does he do? Goes to Canada with an unstable system. No sooner had he arrived than you guessed it, "Hey I'm having problems starting up my computer!" I'm having to email you from someone else's!"

Funny thing about this, he's the supervisor and supposed to set the example, but never does. He's dismissive toward me all the time, yet thinks he knows everything about computers, when he knows jack fart all about them.

My latest disaster that I am waiting to watch unfold is the following: He stores EVERYTHING on his hard drive and never to the network directory we have designated for everyone to store work items on. I told him that he should get in that habit and he says it's inefficient.

yeah, it's going to be really inefficient when your HD crashes and everything is gone forever. jackass.

You think dealing with idiots are a pain? Try being a girl and dealing with the idiots. Not only do they not believe you what you are telling them but they don't believe you just because you are a girl. *sigh*

I've many "fights" with guys who don't believe that a girl could know anything about computers until I've proven my self right and then all I get is an "oh".
    Stupid jerks :-D

Didn't you know already dyamond? Women techs really don't know anything, and their sole purpose is to look pretty and put out...you know, like all other women in the office.

Seriously, I hate people like that.

I don't have any "company experience" working with people like that. I do work for friends when they ask or need me too, and they have to argue with me about how to do this or do that. Sometimes they are right, but if someones giving you advice take it, try it. Even when they ask you to do something then they sit there" Is that done right?"
now some of my friends do like to learn bits of this stuff. Heck I'm still learning! But if you ask someone for help and they help you don't argue with them. You tend to have a bit more experience if their asking you right?
Sorry for my baby rant..got alot going on as of late and needed to vent.:-o

You may have been referencing to my 'idiot' post. IDK I don't call my friends idiots by habit, but some are, as far as computers go, at least most take my advice to heart and those that don't get sent to a local shop because I say ' this is beyond my expertise'.:-D That usually gets their attention!roflmao I'll help anyone who asks for it, if I can of course.

EDIT: I do give a damn when I'm fixing someone's machine, as I believe that most MG rats would agree with me too.

(yes, they are idiots if they ask ME for help and then proceed to tell me everything I'm doing is wrong and how to do it. If I'm wrong and your right, then why haven't YOU fixed it yet?? ;) )

:-D:-D that reminds me of a time, I was on the phone for 20 minutes just trying to figure *what* browser they were using! after I finally got that figured out, it only took about a minute to fix the problem they were having.

I love how people ASK you for computer help, then fully resist anything you SUGGEST might help them... Then they decide to take it to the more expensive shop, and come back and brag about how the shop fixed it doing the same thing I recommended...

I call them idots, cause I don't need the extra wear on my keyboard... :-D:-D

My L and M keys are blank, guess I wore out the L talking about liberals, not sure how the M key got worn off.

Maybe it is time for a new keyboard, my home keys are worn down, the L and M keys are worn off, the O looks like a (. Sorry to get a little OT.

The definition of Stoopid! - From the Phantopedia book of definitions:-

    1) I have a P.C. and I can handle it 'cause everyone else can.
    2) Erm, it aint quite as easy as I thought, I need help/instructions. Fair enough, so I give it to them, (for free).
    3) Yeah, yeah, I already magically knew all that, I don't need you anymore.
    4) (Some days later) Help!, help! my computer is in a mess! I need help again.
    5) Okaay, so did you follow my advice, (nope!), did you have any safety precautions I recommended?, (nope!), did you at least save those, oh so important documents and pics.?, (nope, I thought I knew what I was doing, I just don't understand what went wrong!).
    6) I spend a day or more fixing their stupid lazyness and arrogance, ( for free again). ~(Yeah, I'll definitely do what you suggested from now on.)
    7) (A few days later) Help!, help my computer don't work again, and I did EVERYTHING you said, honest!).
    8) Go back to step (1) again.rolleyes

This is why I don't do many jobs for private individuals anymore. Besides, I'm getting way too old and surly for this crud any more.

    Not in my world.

Don't. Can fix it quickly. Patience is lost when someone trys to tell me how to fix it or its my fault.

    Refer to Answer #1.

Sometimes they are idiots. By definition, if you need someones help, you take thier help and pay or don't pay if it is a friend and be GRATEFUL. It's quite disrespectful to call in someone knowledgeable and then tell them they are wrong when you are clueless. People need to learn to be a bit more humble and not be a know it all in every case. This is what's wrong with our country nowadays, people seem to think they are super special, wonderful and know it all.

I have some guys working on my house, I picked the materials, asked questions, took their advice and walked away. I have no ability to gut my bathroom, sheetrock and tape it and install a tile based shower with a bench. I don't want to either. I certainly don't stand over them and tell them they are doing it wrong.

I could not agree with this more. People don't have any sort of consideration for others. Its always, I know you're doing it wrong, I know how to fix it, I I I. Shut your mouth and let the person you REQUESTED help from do it!

There are a ton of things i don't know how to do but i always ask questions and take the advice of those wiser than me and things always work out better that way.

I have a friend who has 25+ years experience in programming, system maintenance, etc.

I think his specialty is Unix operating system and network security.

A few years ago he told me that he has just learned enough to barely have some inkling of the breadth and depth
    of his own ignorance.

I have heard of consultants complaining about customers who have read a few issues of PC Magazine and then think
that they know all about computers.

It is sometimes said that it's not the totally ignorant person who creates the biggest problems, it's the person who
knows just a little but Believes that he/she knows Much More.

I'm often embarrassed when I think I am behaving like the latter, but at least I have some awareness of it.

You mean with the birth of the internet, everyone didn't become an expert in every topic since all they have to do is google it and find the 'right' answer???:confused

Ya been there, done that.:-o After I realized that I wasn't able to competently post possible real 'solutions' for issues, it took me something like 5 years(self taught) before I was confident enough to help and what I knew best.

I still avoid many subjects because I have no clue.:-D At least now I know what I don't know.;) If I have to google, except for hardware, to find out what someone means then I don't touch it unless I can help with general knowledge.

I do want to say tho, sometimes a poster has pretty specific requirements for what ever reasons, and people are very quick to not even read half of what was written and go off posting what they think is best or not realizing why a user has stated such requirements, just playing the other side here :)
