    Ok guys,
I'm gonna vent a bit. Now I love tech.
Why do I feel like I'm learning all this computer stuff for nothing!? I mean I'm going through school and I get hit with the idea "I'm not going to use this till I get my Network Admin. career." I feel like I'm not going to be using this information in my daily life until then. SO WHY LEARN IT?!
That's my rant for the day.

I am not sure I get the gist of your rant. If your learning the right things, everything you learn is a tool for the toolbox. Just like a toolbox, you don't use every tool, every day, but they are there when you need them.
That is why I (and most likely others) hang out in forums, so we can use our tools and keep them from rusting. I don't subnet everyday or run AD computer & users or tackle a virus removal..
You also have to know the basics, you have to wlak before you run & all.;)

When I started out my IT career I had no idea I'd be wearing hard hats and steel toed boots to run CAT5 and hook up IP cameras, so of this is on the job training, school never taught a class on IP cameras, but knowing what I have learned
    made it all possible.

I have been working with computers since Mr. C bought an Altair when I was in the eighth grade some 35 years ago. I have worked with upwards of a dozen operating systems, two dozen programming languages, and more applications than I can count.

At no point have I ever been able to land a job working with computers. I go into an interview and some middle manager or HR guy asks how much experience I have with Java. To me Java is just another language with a 2-3 month learning curve that looks and acts very much like the one I'm working with now. To them the difference between Java and C++ is like translating from Chinese to Navajo and anybody running Slackware couldn't possibly figure out Android. They then proceed to offer me entry level wages and wonder why I'm unwilling to take a 50+% pay cut. Idiots.

All anybody ever wants to pay me for is electronics. That's OK. I get better wages and job security because I'm the only one in the department that can also write and compile a program to communicate with the instrumentation we use. Yada, yada. I ramble. Anyhow, this is also why I lurk but don't post much. It's awful hard to keep up with the nitty gritty details when you're not actually working in the industry.

The fact is it's hard to get past the entry level stuff if you don't have some formal training. But once you have it, it no longer matters as much as experience and it's hard to say just where that experience is going to lead as far as career paths go.

I`m like you Spock but with maths instead, the only time i use most of what i learn is when i`m in an assessment,or in a course.
I personal can`t see what your learning it wise could be pointless, as it`s I.T lol it`ll be useful to have. But then again i don`t know what you`re learning.
Remember dude you want something hard enough you can achieve it, just keep going, see the end result, see yourself in that job you want.

I'm just curious and I love learning even though I'll never use the info except to solve my own issues or may be able to help someone else.

If you've started learning something, finish it.
Otherwise you have wasted your time because you now only have half the story which is less than half effective.

    Hi

Just have to think in computing as it is in medicine for me as I'm in a computing medical field in that experience is key to all jobs, and while it may not be applicable now it will be at some point so a wide area of expertise is crucial to a good job and pay.

Being very busy all at one point in time is stressful and many who not do multitasking jobs will not know this, nor should they, but having to juggle many tasks at once can get you so stressed that you want to pop!

Its best to slow down and pace as I do, and prioritise jobs, and also learn to say NO! we cannot do everything as some would think we can!

There is no such thing as useless knowledge, just people that haven't put it to use yet - just like any other tool, physical or not. Knowledge grows the mind, the 'spirit' if you will. Therefore, with the correct mindset, it will never be useless as such. ~ Live curious.;)
