Windows 98 (SE). I'm working through the Make-sure-you-do-everything list of steps. One virus was found by RAV. Clicking on Report button produced (am translating): 'Problems with this website may prevent correct display or loading of page.....' Clicking on 'show details' produced RavAntivirus.com/scan/indexie.php plus some tabulated stats (Line 182; character 3; Error: access denied; Code 0 ) There's a virus signature visible somewhere else (128372) and "Mail files: 154". What next?
Previously the BitDefender had found and killed a dialer, I think. A post-RAV scan by AVG warned: 'A change to your Autostart menu has been detected, which could involve a dialer. Verify the entries in your Autostart menu.' Maybe the RAV is getting hooked up on the same thing. Has the Autostart menu something to do with my MS-DOS screen info visible during the boot procedure? A year ago I changed my laptop keyboard and the boot literature now pauses on a reference to 'syst... keyboard', or some such..

I believe that your autostart menu is what is on the startup tab when you hit windows key + r (or click start --> run), type msconfig, and press enter (click ok) Spyware often finds its way into this list, so that it is run every time the sytem is booted.

Uh-uh. Thanks for your post. When in Autostart Menu (i.e. "click start ... run, type msconfig, and press enter") I press 'more options' and get a range of tabs. Under the 'general' tab should I maybe activate the Autostart Menu (which is currently inactive) ?
    Also, under Autostart tab:
Should I uncheck TkBellExe (says something about ..Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe )? Am totally turned off by RealPlayer’s crap.
What about 'TPP Auto Loader’ (also currently checked) ?
What about things like IrMon, TFunckey, THotkey (all .exe s) and TWBrowse? All of latter are currently unchecked.
If you can say that one of these is definitely a virus, how do I delete? I can't select anything. And why didn't AVG delete?

If you are following the steps in this thread, then you are headed in the right direction.

I don't know what all these programs in your startup list are to be honest. I won't be the one to say that any of them are malware. These could just as easily be programs that you've specified to run at system startup.

What you can do is disable them all, and check one at a time, restarting you computer each time, until by elimination, you know which of these are giving you troubles.

Thanx, Mada, for friendly tip. Seems a long and drastic experiment and am not sure how to recognise when I'm deliberately auto-running a dialer. Maybe I'll just continue working through the Clean your System instructions.
Anyone else recognise the strange names I listed two posts below?
