I have just discovered heaps of RDB files. Do I need them? Are they related to creating restore points using XP create restore points or some other program. A Google search refers to a program (Retrospect Express backup) that I have never installed AFAIK. Can I delete all/the oldest ones, some dating back to 2007.

    See small sample below.
    Thanks in advance.

I have 7 ".rdb" files showing, none in a system restore folder. All of the ones I have are related to OpenOffice.org. At least they are all in various Oo_O folders. All have descriptive names(common.rdb, services.rdb, etc.).

    Thanks plastidust. :)

I don't use Open Office so would appreciate if anyone else can point me in another direction.

    Hi Bazza

As these files are in System Volume Information / Restore, we'd think they were SR points, but they are possibly not Microsoft System Restore Files, but actually Zone Alarm logs, so do you have Zone Alarm installed? as ZA is buggy as hell in some versions, it creates large .RDB files and System Restore monitors these sadly, thus you end up with loads.

So what version of ZoneAlarm do you have? 6.5 was one I remember creating these large files.

RDB if memory serves are Reporting DataBase files hence the RDB.

You can turn off System Restores to remove all System Restore point if you know your PC is working well, then reboot and re-enable System Restore, some users IIR said they dont get these being added again some do and the cycle will start again in these files being created if you continue to use ZA, dont know if later versions of this Firewall app work well as I dont use it these days.

Check out http://www.fileinfo.com/extension/rdb for info on these files. No indication they are Zonealarm files - I have only two of them, found in C:/Windows/Internet Logs, and I use ZA.

Thanks all. I've got other major disasters as well over the past 2 days so will have to come back to this one.:cry
Thanks again for your help. I am using #2 sons Vista laptop with a cracked screen and trying to get his music loaded onto a new 160 gig iPod so that is paramount in his needs at the moment.

Compunding this I can't log into my XP laptop, can't load an ACRONIS Backup, can't load a Restore point and can't logon to the Internet or MG.

    See you soon I hope.

Weird computers. :-D After much experimenting, cursing and swearing and still not getting anywhere, I tried booting up just on battery power on the laptop.

Holy Mackeral, it worked as if nothing was wrong. :confused

So I plugged in AC power and away I went, and is still going.

I'm very confused but happy. :-D

Attention Halo. Wiping the old System Restore points certainly worked and got rid of most of the *.rdb files. :major :) ;)

As you suggested, I then rebooted, re-enabled System Restore and created a fresh Restore point.

    Thanks again, David.

I believe that rdb files are associated with Retrospect back-up software.

    Thanks BartP for your reply.:)
It is all a bit irrelevant now, fortunately, as I have switched to Windows 7 and they are not present. :cool
