Jess1rph has it correct Pyrate, the reason for the dummy or CRIMMs is to fill the extra empty slots on your mobo up, if for instance if you have 4 slots and only 2 RIMM modules the spare empty slots have to be populated in order for the system to boot.

There are a few pitfalls to RDRAM, one being that you have to use two sticks, but also you cannot mix size and density of ram as a pair, which is why its always advisable to buy the ram in either a dual pack or at exactly the same time, and double check that the product ID#s are exactly the same,
