Ok, so heres the story. i bought this laptop (specs are posted below) and it came with a nightmare installed windows 8.1, i immediately did the windows 10 upgrade, for multiple reasons, starters, ive been a computer tech for 20 years, and f**k windows 8. i decided to test play 10 because it was free. now the website for asus does not have drivers made for this hardware previous to windows 8 and i am pretty much stuck running windows 8 or 10.
which i am not but anyway....
i have live image discs for windows 7 ultimate 64bit. and windows XP SP3. i would prefer to put XP and Crunchbang11. final release side by side, or to have win7 and ubuntu 12.4 side by side on it, however my concern before i begin this project is that the asus website offers no video, sound, wificard, diskdrive, hdmiport etc etc drivers. they have them for win8 and for win 10, but not for 7 or xp, which are the OS systems i prefer to run. i was wondering if anyone here might be able to offer me a solution to my inability to find compatible drivers for xp or windows 7 for this hardware. i really despise 8 and 10 is almost as bad as vista.... its better than 8 and its better than vista and its better than 2000, but its still in the same category in my mind. if its not 98/95/xp/7 (im leary of windows 7 anyway but its stable atleast. 10 is not stable... ive almost lost my D: partition twice because of windows 10 critical errors.)

What im totally asking for is driver support for my entire system for windows xp or windows 7 ultimate 64x.
i am currently running windows 10, upgraded from 8.1.

please help me, i really really want to put XP on here more than anything but i will settle for win7 ultimate 64x. i can handle the linux stuff on my own or through ubuntu support forums, but for windows. i trust majorgeeks.com. ive been attending your site since i was 7 years old, when my mother sent me here for spybot 1.6.

Yet again i just want to put XP on here or win7... any help trying to know what to do before i start the re-imaging process would be very appreciated. also want to say, i tried running ubuntu16 side by side with win 10 on here already and had to remove ubuntu because the windows bootloader purposefully prevented ubuntu from booting and purposefully destroyed the linux grub. fuck windows 10 they are trying to prevent unix systems from being given to the public, and i hate them for it. im sick of microsoft and my new favorite words in the microsoft world is "no longer supported. final stable release."

so what you just said to me translates to. wipe everything install linux mint, and buy a new laptop with windows 7 or xp capability.

I said nothing about Linux Mint.
And I doubt you'll find a new laptop that supports Windows XP (or 7).

by new i mean new to me, and i see what your saying but trying to virtual box everything i do is such a pain in the ass, i wont be reverting to windows 8, and windows 10 is leaving forever so... linux mint, and a new laptop here i come.

i know you didnt say linux mint, i was being facetious.

I run both XP and 7 in a virtual machine on a Win 10 system. Eldon is advising you do the same, though with Win 8 as host system rather than Win 10. You could use either VirtualBox or VMware Player for the VM.

i understand how VMware works, and i have used virtual box extensively (meaning i once spent two months configuring vbox on ubuntu 12.4 and wine until i could literally play windows world of warcraft live on an xp in a window on my desktop) what im saying is, thanks for your time and effort, i appreciate your help and attempts at solutions, im just gonna turn this system into a full out linux system and go buy a different laptop and put windows 7 on it.

    No problem.
    I know how you feel.
I run Windows XP Professional SP3 and Windows 7 Ultimate. I will not be upgrading (for free) to Windows 10 Pro. And when the day comes that I have to replace hardware, and the new doesn't support Windows XP & 7, I will install Linux Mint and a virtual machine for Windows XP & 7.

i bought the computer to get through a semester of college and it did its job, now my student loan check comes next week so i wanted to do this project because i figured the laptop was a temporary solution and a chance to test play the new malware, i mean windows 10. i figured that i would have actually brick'd this machine by now, but surprisingly i've been able to recover every critical error shitdows 10 has given me. it has shown its true colors to me one time too many and i am dissatisfied with it. i was planning on buying another laptop for school anyway, so i might as well turn this one into my tech experiment rig, which is what it was meant to become after last semester anyway. for a single board soldered crap bag, it actually runs well, decent battery life, not much overheat(huge notebook problem) only win10 is destroying the hardware slowly so i was looking for an alternative. but yet again thanks for everything guys, i love your website and have been an avid follower for the upper side of a decade and a half. your community is always helpful and cool, and since we are already on the subject, is there any new linux distribs other than the ubuntu 16 or new mint, i might be interested in test playing, heads up i WILL NOT use fedora.

Respecting the fact that this is predominately a Windows forum now, watching your language of course...
members "Hedron James, or plodr" could also give you a Linux nose bleed.

I don't really hang here very much anymore, only stopping by when someone throws up the bat signal. It's been so long since I've used Windows on metal that I'm pretty useless with Windows issues. I've been running Ubuntu on my machines for several years now without misssing a beat. I have a Win7 VM and a Win10VM, but those are moreso for software that I MUST use because of others, i.e. Quickbooks for my accountant; Silverlight in a browser for some govt websites, etc...

Back to Linux. Mint & Ubuntu are excellent distros. Both are based on Debian as a "mother" distro, although technically Mint is based on Ubuntu, which is based on Debian. Distrowatch lists them as the 3 most popular Linux distros (and have been for quite some time):

    http://distrowatch.com/

That list should keep you busy for as long as it keeps your interest. Consider it a "master list" of distro options in the Linux world. If something looks interesting, click the link to the distro page and learn more!

Mint is probably the most user-friendly for linux newcomers, due to its Windows-like familiarity. I personally prefer Ubuntu, as it suits my workflows and preferences better. However, Mint (with its Cinnamon desktop) and Ubuntu (with its Unity desktop), tend to get a little "resource heavy" as they've matured. Your machine has "middle specs" which should handle pretty much any linux distro just fine, but your 1.7GHZ dual-core (with hyper-threaded quad-core) would lend itself to better experience with "lighter" distros, such as XFCE and LXDE desktop based distros. Xubuntu and Lubuntu come to mind, which are based on Ubuntu, but with a "lighter" desktop environment. The most recent versions of the 'buntu family are 16.04 LTS (long-term-support) versions, but the first "point release" is scheduled within the next month. While they are certainly useable today (and I would, in fact, recommend a LTS version!) the point release is when things start to get really polished up! By all means, install today and start using; but take the point release upgrades as soon as they're offered!

Also, in my opinion, you are right to stay away from Fedora. Fedora isn't really meant to be a distro for desktop users, but moreso a "test bed" of new tech for developers/users to massage bugs & useability for the parent Red Hat distro. It's a nice distro, but it's cutting edge. The newest, latest & greatest of everything. If you fancy that, go for it. If you do not, maybe save it for a VM, but not the base/host system. Again, JMO...

And since you mentioned it, Crunchbang too, which is based on Debian but using the supremely lightweight Openbox windows manager! However, Crunchbang has been recently abandoned by the developer, but picked up by another group and development continues as Bunsen Labs. Does this look familiar to you:

    https://www.bunsenlabs.org/

If you liked Crunchbang, I'd wholeheartedly endorse BunsenLabs for you. Openbox is a little "jarring" for unfamiliar users, but the minimal resource requirements make it a truly snappy and responsive distro. If you're already familiar, I'm fairly certain that this distro will be an excellent fit between your "middling" hardware requirements and your distro requirements. Based on nothing more than what you have already disclosed on this thread, BunsenLabs would be my recommendation to you. But it's YOUR machine, YOUR preferences, and YOUR choice!

Good luck, and enjoy the learnings!

I appreciate the responses. ive been working linux for about 5 or 6 years at this point (when i started i was running 12.4 on a dell c400) my specs are middle but they are definitely a step above average for what im used to running. i have always done Ferrari work on dinosaurs, i got good at it when i worked at the college in vegas. i do usually stick to xubuntu on my live drive, because i never know what hardware ill have to live boot into.
im not sure if to take what Moriarty said as an insult, threat, or as jest so im going to simply ignore it beyond this sentence.

i do visit distrowatch just to keep up with the new distros. i understand that fedora is for more advanced users, but i wont use it for reasons other than that. im confident in my CLI capabilities with any deb dist, fedora just has a resource heavy interface that is not user friendly to anyone who doesn't enjoy over complication. i did not know that crunchbang got picked up again that is the best news i have heard all week. i started with ubuntu 12.4, but as a tech nerd i always collect old installers and old iso's for os's. so i ran around and tried out puppy and D.S.L., played with Xubuntu and Lubuntu, lookin for a good lightweight i could use on some older 95 and 98 machines i had laying around (no internet usage just old dos games and text files for taxes etc.) anyway, i came across crunchbang 11 and saw it was no longer in support or production at all, and i picked it up. i fell in love with it instantly. became my favorite dist for unix ive ever used. i had no clue they picked it up at bunsen so im definitely going to be researching that some more. and best of all the crunchbang v11 iso that i still have four years later, will run on a 566MZH win 98HP.
i really appreciate all the help and attention ive received on this forum as i said before, ive been coming to major geeks for almost 15 years to obtain software, and i just now began using the forums as of yesterday really. maybe a couple times before but nothing major, usually stupid shit. i have to say im somewhat disappointed that there are no generic drivers for running this machine on win7 or xp. ive decided now that i know crunchbang got picked up again that ill be re-imaging this whole system to run nothing but it, in the mean time im going to attempt an XPsp3 and s2 after install, and im going to attempt a win7 ult 64 and 32 one at a time, just to see if windows updates will offer me a generic driver pack that might at least partially work. but all in all im just gonna put crunchbang on it and buy a seperate laptop for school with win7 capabilities. i will say i do not trust windows 10 at all after my test play. there are some critical errors i found that are downright unacceptable. i will post a short listing of some of the stuff needed to be done if your going to run windows 10 against my advice.

careful with win10. ive been testplaying it, heres a few tips. first, gut the bloatware.... get ccleaner by piriform and remove the useless programming and pre installed crap apps.. secondly, dont ever map a file to auto open a program from seperate partitions. (i went to map an iso on my D: partition to run on alcohol52% on my c: drive and it corrupted my D: part. the moment i checked always use this program. i had to spend 9 hours with a live ubuntu disc recovering my files in back up then repartition my D: side....) third thing. i will send u a batch file i found. theres certain processes that win10 will run that will have a 24 hour drain on bandwidth and processor/ram. its like leaving the lights on your car after you take the keys out and go to bed for the night. wake up the next day and your data usage is thru the roof, jacks up the cable bill. found a batch file that prevents it. theres a second batch file i have to send you that will prevent windows 10 for daily mailing user information to windows. the new liscense term agreement allows them to be email copies of your personal files daily. including tax info, written docs and rtfs. musics and recordings, and other sensitive files that normally would be privacy protected. also windows signed a contract to freely give any information collected by windows 10 to the FBI, DOD, CIA, FCC, and IRS. so you want to disable it because there is some one rifling thru everyone files literally looking for reasons to arrest people.... im not being paranoid, read the agreements carefully and you will know exactly what i am talking about. also win10 will throttle your information relay capabilities with your router to make room for its authorized spyware... the best way to prevent getting less than 1mb download speeds or to prevent your down/uploads from being throttled by windows 10 is to disable nagle's algorithm. (nagles algorithm is the thing that puts header info on every packet sent to and from your router to regulate packet size. however disabling it prevents that header info from being placed, that header info is supposed to regulate size, and is the cause of windows 10 bandwidth throttling.)
problem uploading file. ill try again later, but i have the batch files to correct these errors saved.
also you want to turn all your powersaving settings to do nothing, windows 10 has a critical error with awakening from sleep or hibernate, and has issues with shutdown/restart processes, especially on notebooks and laptops. (im doing my test play on an asus notebook x555la.)
and last but not least, you will need this, create a new folder on your desktop. simply re name it this "{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}" without the parenthesis but with the {} it will create an interface called godmode. which it will list every single administrative command or tool in the entirety of win10 in a single list for you.... super super useful for the admin to have on the desktop.
and if u ever want to roll back to win7, let me know, i have a solid iso for ultimate 64x, legal legit, i can send u. its a business copy my friend bought, i have legal licensing to install it as many times as i want on as many machines as i want.

Can I completely disable Cortana on Windows 10?
Windows 10 has Cortana, which I don't like. I disabled it as soon as I could. However, looking in Task Manager, the process for Cortana is still running, and can't be effectively terminated: ending...

i just got back from bunsenlabs.org and OMFG TY SOOO MUCH FOR TELLING ME. im re imaging an old desktop i have for this purpose of test playing linux distro's right now. i will get back to you via inbox with my thoughts on the new bunsen release vs crunchbang 11.

last thing before i go, i dont know if any of you ever played AD&D back in the day but it was my favorite, i found out recently that theres a game that has been out for many years that i wish i had known about before now, but i know it now, and sadly while its one of the best angband/nethack like muds i have ever played, the servers are severly underpopulated and i dont want to invite every idiot on the planet to come play. you guys seem sensible enough so if you have the time please take a moment to check this game out. its lightweight, plays in a window, and easily great for an at work loading screen time consumer, super simple if you have ever played any mud before, even new users just read the manual.

EUOtopia.com. please register at the forums, and i recommend playing on the PD server BEFORE regular server, only because its way more challenging than reg server and worth practicing.

    check it out.

thanks again to everyone here for everything, and i will be back later to post my results from my xp and win7 tests on the generic drivers windows update offers...

:) Member plodr has a bunch of light on resources distros that she puts on flashdrives for testing. Contact her or post your interest for her to decide. She's also thinking about whether you will be purchasing in a week or if you're trying to use what you've got.

I don't run Win 10 and have no intentions of doing so. I purchased four Win 7 computers (2 desktops and 2 netbooks) to future-proof my husband and me until 2020.

Meanwhile I have an Android tablet to figure out if a chromebook might be a future purchase once googleplay is working decently on chromeOS.

I also do test drive USB sticks with different distros to figure out if I might want to install on a netbook for my husband to surf in 2020.

I don't like Ubuntu but I do have sticks with Kubuntu and Xububtu.
My current favorite distro is LXLE Desktop. (I avoid any distro that doesn't allow persistence because I don't want to have to re-invent the wheel, aka keep setting up the browser, every time I fire up the live stick.)

ive owned a chromebook. they are crap, cant reimage unless in developermode also, only usefull if u have a internet connection, cant store local files, the os is bad interface problems, my wife likes it but your smartphone is better hardware and software, and can do MORE than a chromebook... they are a waste of time and money, save the heartache, buy a laptop.

oh and the screen/internal casings for screen connections break super easy. close it to hard and you will be opening the back cover to reseat the wirings weekly. might as well cut out the port and solder it to the board directly, the only way to fix that problem... or superglue it closed... they will overheat in 80 degree weather, and they will self shut down as a preservation mechanism if the sensor on the processor gets over 40 degrees Celsius.

most desktops run average 28-35 degress celsius but after 2 years u need to apply thermal past because the average becomes 40-50. on chromebooks the average is 32-36, and if it hits 40 the systems hard shutsdown.... makes it hard to write on google docs in summer. the whole thing is designed to be based around a gmail account, and if you lose the account information (login/pass etc) you have to wipe your chromebook and start a new gmail to synch it to, i really dont recommend it, unless you use all of googles services religiously and you shell out the cash for google drive monthly.

Thanks for posting this silvervulpus. I have now installed W10 3 times to try to find a way to work with the OS. Each time I have cursed it and reimage 7 onto the machine I was using to test. I used Private Firewall on 10 set to alert whenever an app tries to connect to the internet, and you are 100% correct about everything you have said here. I blocked all the connections (PF says what is behind the attempt which is great), of course, but I chose not to "Remember" the choice, so that I could study the behaviors of the OS. It's too far gone to even explain or to tame or work with. There must two dozen or more processes that aren't in Windows 7, giving MS the facility to do as you mentioned and gather your personal files and information. MS has programmed privacy 100% out of Windows. Literally every Window I opened spawned an internet connection.

I'm watching to see what will happen, but I think there's going to be a big mess over 10. And watch out guys. MS is slowly trying to change Windows 7 into a gathering machine too. Of course Windows 8 already is the same. As for me and Windows 7, about the middle of last year, I went carefully through the updates and removed a good many and then shut off Windows Updates on all 5 PCs I have here. I don't have time to dig through the junk to find the updates that actually have merit to them, but I suspect they're more or less all corrupt in one way or another, anyway.

Thanks MS. Anyway, my PCs are running fine without updates. :)

BTW, I second that it would be great if there were a way to come up with drivers for XP for newer hardware. I still run it on two PCs, and I like Eldon really appreciate the simplicity of the OS. Trouble is MS never updated the .NET capability of XP to 4.5. That's kind of a limiting factor with software, but then another thing is that MS has directX and XP will only support v9. That means that modern graphics cards that can use DX11 and 12 aren't usable with XP. Can still find a pretty cool Radeon for and XP machine like a HD 5800 series or what not, but not the really great low power newer ones...

Thanks for the comments on Windows 10. It looks like the kooks have taken over the insaneasylum at MS...

The behaviour of all this phoning home stuff in Win 10 can be modified or blocked with third party software. I use O&O ShutUp10 and it's very effective. Get used to 10, it's the future.

thank you eldon and earthling for the links, very appreciated tools for the toolbox. i havent purchased yet, financial things, birthday +broken car + no child support in 4 months from my wifes husband, cant afford to replace it yet and cant risk tampering with the image until i know i can do it in a way that isnt going to ruin my college career, hopefully i will have money to replace system this fall, worse comes to absolute worst, i will be on my 1gig ram, 1.3gzh, dell with xp. and a whole whopping 100gb hdd for the rest of the semester. couple tools you might want in return. useful for win10 ip traffick watching. http://download.cnet.com/Wireshark/3000-2085_4-10668290.html and this next one is useful because its solid programming with a customizable blacklist. so you can pick up the ip you want to block with wireshark and use this to stop it. https://sourceforge.net/projects/peerguardian/files/

gotta say tho, inputting 5500 ip's by hand would kill my mind. thats why i dont write programs, im just very good at using them and identifying useful vs non-useful. one more thing, when you fresh install win10 or roll back to 7, run http://www.belarc.com/. so you can get the actual part# and sku's and all that for the right drivers, cuz win10 and winupdate thru win10, dont always give the best drivers for the job. and belarc makes finding the proper one easier.
