I appreciate you trying to find an existing thread, but that one was 5 years old and needs to stay dead :)

I made a new thread for you.

Hi Freakydude, sure i would like to share my experience, :major

first to start, i manage a company which contains approx 5000 computers, both laptops and desktops, we also have approx 150 different servers, about 50 of them are physical servers and we also have 5 performance servers which server about 100 virtual servers running on VMWare.

To monitor all of this we use the Lansweeper inventory software, the software itself works clientless and is based on WMI. The clientless setup was required because some of our systems we are legally not allowed to modify, so WMI was the only option..., luckily lansweeper does its job well for this. in lansweeper we have a console which monitors both our Hardware and software of all workstations and servers. We have been using lansweeper for approx 2 years at the moment and they recently released their version 5 which looks to contain a lot of new cool functions. I've some examples below from their site, the screen below is an example of how you get to see the details for a specific computer.

Lansweeper also makes a connection to Active Directory, so it can read details from your users and make the link between a user an its computer, so its always easy to track the relation between both a computer and its users and vice-versa :cool

in the version 5 they also have a nice SNMP management interface, so you can easily monitor switches for example and instantly view what workstations are connected. (previously our serverroom cabling was a mess, so it always took us 15 minutes to track to what port a computer was connected, this tool helps a lot!) example:

below you can find the link, i believe they have a freeware version which you can use as a trial: Lansweeper Network Inventory software

hope this will help you a bit further in finding what you need. :major
