I am trying to format a 60Gig hd and install Win XP Pro, but everytime it gets done loading the setup files, and says "Setup is starting Windows" it never gets any further. I'm not sure if it's freezing up, or what, it just never gets any further.

    Any ideas?

    1.Is the XPcd good?
2.Is the hardware good? What was the reason for formating?

What do you mean by "good"? It's a legitimate copy, and last I knew it wasn't corrupted or anything, but I suppose it could be "bad".

What do you mean "is the hardware good?" The HD is 2 years old, and was given to us, as far as I know, it is in working order.

So, why won't Windows load, anyone have any experiences like this?

Thanks, martinch. It said that sometimes it can take 30 minutes for the Setup to load, but after a few hours, I figure it probably isn't going to load. I also tried some of those bios work arounds, but to no avail. I'm wondering if the bios needs to be updated?
Prior to trying this new hard drive, we had been experiencing the computer freezing up, and when I tried to load Windows on our old hard drive, it would hang up at "Setup is loading Windows.".
Any other ideas? I'm stumped here. Thanks for the help.

Test your ram first, 768m of ram may be you used different rams, so I suggest you should setup new OS with 1 kind of ram is better, after set up seccess put the others in.

You can check for 2 Things.
1.Are you getting any HDD Activity (The LED on the Front Panel lights up when there is HDD ACtivity.)?
    2. Is there any CD Rom Activity (Again the LED on the Front of the CD Rom)?

RAM has been working fine as far as I know, I've had it for a year or so.

Do you mean check for these things after it reaches "Setup is loading Windows"? If so, I'll check that. Of course, before that, the hard drive is spinning away, as well as the CD ROM, with lights lightingup as well. I'll check.. Something the Knowledge base article said was that if I could restart the computer by pressing CTRL ALT DELETE, it probably wasn't really hung up, and I'll try to do that too, but after a few hours of sitting at the same window saying "Setup is loading Windows" I'm sure it ain't going to start up. :(

I think your HDD got problem with MBR by virus or some thing wrong like that at MBR, just trying fdisk /mbr or using other softs that can fix MBR then format /u/c again.

    What's MBR?

MBR is the Master Boot Record.

    1. Download and use the HDD Setup Utility for your HDD manufacterer.
    2. If the install continually freezes in the same spot, your CD may be defective.
    3. The HDD may be bad.
    4. The CD Drive may be going bad.

Start with setting up the drive with the HDD setup utilites for your drive. Then try to insatll WinXP Pro.

We took the HD out and slaved it on another machine, and it was some kind of problem with Windows not recognizing the boot up device, or something like that, (error code 7b....) and we had a trojan of some kind as well, so it looks like we're on the road to recovery. THanks for allyour help.

With that situation, where you basically want to start over, I typically, boot with a 98 boot disk from (www.bootdisk.com) then bring up fdisk, wipe the partitions, then I reboot back onto the 98 boot disk and run:

    fdisk /mbr

Then I slap in my xp cd and attempt another install.

Yeah, That 's right. after run: Fdisk /mbr
    Restart at CD boot win98
    Run: format /u/c
Put Winxp disk in CD driver then setup
