I reinstalled windows xp on my dell computer that had vista. Dell doesnt provied the disk so i had the windows xp disk and now i need the drivers, so i downloaded from the drivers from the dell website to the usb stick on a different computer so that i would be able to load them onto the broken computer. and now i am unable to open the files from the usb stick onto the affected computer. is anyone able to help me and tell me how to open the files.

or maybe tell me an easy way to get these drivers loaded onto the computer because it does not connect to the internet yet.

    thank you for your help!

    Hi

What error do you get when trying to open the fikes frim the usb stick?

Try burning the driver files to a CD and see if that works ok.

What model Dell do you have?

This is a Dell Vostro 200

When I double click the driver file that's loaded on the USB stick - a box opens with this info:

    Open With
"Choose the program you want to use to open this file"

Then there is a list of applications like:
    internet Explorer
    word Pad
    Media Center
    Etc.

This is where I'm lost - I can't get the driver to load/run

    Hi

Seems as if you have an issue with opening .exe files as that is what Dell list as their drivers, so this issue will also affect any applications you wish to install.

Could be a corrupt install but try this info first http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555067 and then see if you can open the .exe files.

I must have loaded the drivers down to the USB memory incorrectly. I can't even run/open them on the fully functional computer.

For example when I view the downloaded Systems file this is what I see.

    Systems
    file
    4,051 KB

Its like I downloaded a word file. I must have done something wrong.

When something like that happens to me, I close that pop-up and go to windows explorer, in my computer appears the stick and all I have in there that way I can open/read/ install whatever I need. :confused

I have no idea what this means, and I have no idea what a "Systems" file is. Download your drivers again from this link. You'll want to run Unknown Devices to find out exactly which drivers you need (the Dell website lists 12 video files for download). Primary drivers are: chipset (install first), audio, video, ethernet/network, modem. Reboot after each driver install. If you have continued problems, be sure the files you download are .EXE files. Dell drivers are almost always files named in this format: R1234567.EXE - simply double click the file to install the driver. When you're on the Dell site, items shown in blue are "click-able". In the 1st screen shot below, if you click one of the blue arrows, you'll get a menu of of files available for download in that category. To the right of each item listed will be a blue "Download" button. Use it instead of the "Add to list" option, and use the "Download with browser" option if you get a window like the 2nd screen shot below (use the 2nd option). Let us know how it goes and if you have continued problems.... GOOD LUCK!

    Hi

What browser are you using? if not IE then try IE, If IE then try Firefox or Opera.

Do you use any download manager applications if so disable them as they are known at times to corrupt a file.

Problem Solved. Thank you for your help.
I was able to load the NIC Driver to the USB and install that on the affected computer so I could connect to the Net. Then I installed XP Service Packs 2 than 3. After that I was able to go to the Dell web-site and download the other Drivers in the proper order. Machine now works great.

When I go to: Systems / Hardware / Device Manager / Other Devices (there is a ? mark in front of - Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus

I can seem to fix that, everything else is fine.

I was able to download that driver from the RealTek web site - I wonder why the Dell Audio driver did not do the job.

Thanks again for all your help.

I did notice one thing when the computer re-starts. Before it switches to Windows the screen stops and shows "Diskette drive 0 seek failure" I then need to push F1 to continue.

    Thanks Again

    Hi

Boot into your BIOS and look for the boot order list and remove the 3.5" floppy from the list and save and exit the BIOS.
