    Hello all,

I just purchased a used computer and am wondering how to re-register it to me.
the microsoft software has never been registered and I am sure that at some point when I would like to use it it will need to be registered. It seems that any issue I might have down the road would be easier resolved if the computer is registered to yes or no? Do I contact Dell? Do they need to contact the previous owner?

    Thanks for the help Jeb

    Hello,

What OS is the computer running? If we can find this out, we can see who the computer is registered to as all Microsoft OSes have to be registered within 30 days.

    Good day all,

The OS is XP home edition. computer was bought in 2004. I could load it with an XP professional I bought a couple years ago and have never installed on anything. If that would make it easier. The computer has some issues and I am still trying to figure those out.

What you are suggesting seems to be a good solution for the problem.

That would only let me register the OS I think. I contacted Dell and I need to get information from the person I purchased the computer from. Problem is she won't get back to me now. I think she thought she was getting rid of some sort of headache here and is afraid I just want to get my money back. Not the case I am happy with the pute and what does one really expect for $200.

    Sorry for the rant :cry

So ... I'm sorry I'm not quite getting the picture ... are you using the OEM OS from the Recovery Disk or Partition or a different version.

"Registering" with Microsoft is not necessary. There is no benefit that I have seen.

Your copy of XP Professional, is it an OEM version or retail version?

As someone else has suggested, go with a fresh install of XP pro and don't worry about the registration. Activation=yes, registration=don't need.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

    Drizzles,
I was simply trying to get my name into the computer. You know how when you go into some files the owners name comes up. I wanted that to be mine. I am still using the original oem os system.

    Jconstan,

The version I have of XP Pro is an OEM version that has never been used. I purchased from someone starting a business that got a corporate version and sold off those they never installed. It does have the reg. code included.

Oh righto ... well you simply want to create a new user and and change who the computers registered owner. Inside the attached .zip file there is a simple program called Change Owner. It will allow you to change who the computer is owned by. Although I do have to agree that it would be a better idea simply to do a fresh, clean install.

The cool thing is I got all the disks. She never registered any of the MS office just the OP system. I didn't re-registered the OS but went in and renamed the computer to me.
