    Hi, I still seem to be having an intermittant problem with my PC re-booting after having gotten to my logon page, yesterday it just froze altogether while I was writing a word document then today after logging on, a notepad window appeared and the following was written in the window;
    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787
    I don't know if this is a software or a hardware problem? can someone help, thankyou.

    Probably not hardware.

    You can delete that file, its in the startup folder group and named, most likely, desktop.ini.

    As for the reboots, go to System Properties, advanced, startup and recovery settings.

    Uncheck Automatically restart under system failure.

    See if you can get a stop code and any files mentioned the next crash.

    Hi Adrynalyne, thanks for the speedy reply, I've unticked the auto startup box, however not sure if I've rightly deleted the desktop.ini file, I wasn't sure how to reach the startup folder so I did a search, then opened the startup file that way, a notepad window appeared and I deleted the entire message, is that ok or not, also as far as stop codes are concerned, DOH! are these generated in an error message window with the red cross that sometimes appears when there is a major PC problem? if so I've not had any of them, I'm running windows XP Pro.

    Put a check back into that startup item, Pozzy.

    Then, go to start, all programs, and look for the startup folder.

    You can permanently delete it from here.

    Stop errors will be the dreaded Blue Screen of Death.

    You will know it when it comes up.

    Hi Adrylalyne, ok I put a tick back in the box and I've found the startup file, in the program folder, I click on desktop and the MT notepad window appears as it does when I logon, how do I stop it appearing, I cannot delete the desktop folder as it belongs to the operating system, I think.

    In the startup folder, you want to delete the actual desktop.ini file, not just edit it.

    Sorry about this Adrynalyne, I must be thick or what, but when I go to programs, then to startup, which is just below accessories and games, an arrow allows another small window to open and I see in my own particular startup, (desktop, kodak easyshare software and spywareguard), as for the desktop thats it, I dont see desktop.ini, if I right click the desktop then properties I get a window which says that desktop is opened with notepad, I dont know if I am in the right place that you are telling me to go to, I'm sorry about this but is there another way of getting to this file so I can delete it, thanks for your patience.

    Don't apologize, no need :)

    Yes, desktop is the one in startup to kill.
