What are you trying to develop? Different types of software have different routes of development. For instance, there are free "engines" available for making games. Generally speaking, a good knowledge of software theory and a solid knowledge of programming (or at least have a real good idea of what's involved) is required. Software is written in many different programming languages, including the various flavors of C, Visual Basic, Java, Hypertext (HTML), and there's tons more. Different languages are better at different things. Like many web based programs use HTML and/or Java. So it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish.

I'm trying to develop a program solely based on teaching people how to run a computer... the basics... like a tutorial based program... I probably should have used that term instead....
