I need someone to help me... I was repartitioning my hard drive and trying to reformat it. Now I can't get it to read off of my CD ROM drive. Is there anything that i can do to get this back up and running? It is my kids computer, but i really need it for them... Thanks for all of the help

    Two ways:
    1. download this onto a computer that is functional and has a floppy drive.
    http://www.bsd.ee/~nezdali/PHOTOZ/dj/boot98.exe
then run the program. It will ask you for a floppy disk so it can create a boot floppy.

Once the floppy is created, put it in the non-functional machine and power up. This will load a boot environment that will be able to read the CD.

Put the cd in the drive and change drives to the cd rom drive by typing E: and hit enter.
    Then type setup.

    2. You can change the boot order of the system to boot from the CD-ROM first. I can't recall if Win95 had a bootable cd for it that is why I put this one second. All you would do is change the boot order, save the settings in the bios, restart the machine with the CD-Rom in the drive. Then follow the onscreen instructions.

I tried that and it says "invalid Disc". What do I do now?

I just ran a test using that boot disk maker and had no problem booting from it. Try making the disk again. Make sure BEFORE you use the program that the disk has been formatted. Then create the boot disk with the program. You'll need to make sure that FLOPPY is set to first boot option in the bios. Or you can remove the CD from the drive and boot again. Sometimes the boot orders are swapped and CD is set first. So if the win95 disk isn't bootable, then it will give you that error. If you remove the CD , it will search for the next bootable device.. hopefully in this case it will be the A: drive.

Did you choose 'Boot with CD-ROM support' when you booted from the floppy?

At what location did you type setup.exe? If at the C: prompt for your main hard drive then you won't get anything, unless there is a setup.exe there. Suggest you try cd to the correct location, or type the correct path to the setup application. For example, if your CD drive is known as M: then type M:\setup.exe

See I think that my CD drive is D: and i have tried that, but I still get the error messages. Does anyone know of anything that I can do? I have a totally clean hard drive, and other than taking it to a computer place, I don't know what to do and I really can't afford to take it to a computer place. Thanks again

OK I'll ask the obvious questions.

After booting from the floppy in Kodo's link and choosing 'With CD-ROM Support'...
    1) What CD do you have in the CD-ROM drive?
    2) What do you see when you switch to E: and type 'dir'?

Booting from a 98 startup floppy will put the CD drive at E: and put it in the path. Doesn't matter what drive letter you type 'setup' at.

It doesn't ask me to boot with CD support... i get a lot of stuff when i type dir... is there something that i am suppose to be looking for?

OK, download this Win98 boot floppy program:
    http://www.24by7.ca/files/boot98se.exe
    Run it
    Make the floppy
    Boot from the floppy
Select 'Start Computer with CD-ROM support'
When it finishes booting type 'setup'

If you get the same error, switch to E: and type 'dir' and post what you see back here.
