READ ME FIRST Question

Whilst working my way through the sticky READ ME AND RUN ME FIRST on malware removal, I came to the bit where I had to run Windows Defender in safe mode (step 4) and couldn't, the reason given in the post apparently being that I am running old SP levels on XP. I have SP2, so to follow the advice later on, what newer OS should I update to?

Also, in step 6, when I tried to run the online scanning I couldn't connect to the internet after rebooting in safe mode with networking connection. I have 2 Meg ADSL, not dial up as suggested, what could be other reasons for this?

After running all the scans, etc. I found my internet home page had changed to Windows Update!! Oh what a long day it was, lol.

I'm sure I'm just a bit thick and you're all shaking your heads, but any suggestions on the above would be welcome. The actual advice on the READ Me is great and I appreciate the excellent and valuable job that all on these forums provide. So this post is also my chance to say thanks!

 

Have you run Windows Update? Might try that and see if it would allow you to finish the spyware steps.

I'm bang up to date with Windows updates, Matacumbie. Or, at least those that are express.

Sure. There are plenty of people that cannot perform every step there for one reason or another. Just complete the ones you can then start a thread in the Malware Forum here, http://forums.majorgeeks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=35

Those guy's are used to users that might have trouble with certain scans or programs. They can get you straightened out, just tell them or refer to this thread.
