"Read Only" Box?

What does it mean when the "Read Only" box is checked in Properties? Thanks.

 

i believe it means all you can do is view the file. you can't write to it or execute it

 

Just as the name implies and waltaja said, you can only view a 'read-only' file. IF you need to modify an editable document, then it would only give you the option to SAVE AS.. unless you uncheck the 'read-only' attribute in its properties beforehand.
