I have an access database file that is not maked read only, but everytime i try and open it, it stays that the file is read only and cannot be changed or saved. The file is being saved on a server which it is not marked as read only on the server or on any other pc the file is brought up on. any ideas?

have you tried rebooting the server its hosted on, sometime programs lock files and if for some reason that programs closes without properly unlocking it would cause a similar issue. Also can you copy the database file to a new folder or duplicate file and try opening it.

It sounds to me like some other user or application has the file open when you try to access it.

Can you make a local copy and try? If so, does it give you the same problem?

I copied the file and pasted it just to make sure the file wasn't open anywhere that i didn't know about and i got the same result.

Did you try the reboot or is that not possible?

Because nobody but you has your local copy open. There should be tools on this site for determining what applications/users may have the file open, but I can't remember which it is. I would have a look through the download section.

regardless of who has it open or not, shouldn't it be marked as read only if thats what it is coming up as? Im not trying to uncheck it and make it not read only, there is no check marking it read only, but yet when you open it thats when you get the message saying that it is read only

Nope. Office locks files as read only if more than one user tries to open them. Its no good if you have two or more people working on the same file, you could potentially be undoing all of each others work.

ok did some checking, no one else is using the file so that can't be the problem

It's also possible that an application has the file open. That is not so easy to determine. Again, I recommend a tool that IIRC can be found on the download site.
