OK, this is a real simple question: is there a way to display a different background on a dual-monitor system, without using 3rd party software? Haven't seen anything obvious, but I was wondering if there was a reg hack out there than anyone might know about. And no, I don't want to download any software just to do this. :)

    Thanks!

If you have a Nvidia or ATI, their software allows for it. As for XP out of the box, sorry. The reason that XP out of the box does not do different backgrounds for each monitor, is because Microsoft expects you to "Stretch" the desktop out, or use one for editing, and one for controls, which means one would never show the desktop.

I've got integrated Intel Extreme config'd as the secondary, and an ATI Radeon 9250 PCI as the primary. The included software allows for multiple desktops, but not different desktop wallpaper on the different monitors.

You could use Microsoft's Powertoy Virtual Desktop Manager, which would allow you to specify a different Wallpaper. Use Desktop One for the left monitor, and Desktop Two for the Right monitor.
