Okay so last night I was trying to burn a dvd via nero8, I tried to play back the clip through nero which I converted from avi to mpeg2 format using TMPGenc. As soon as I click the play button on nero my sound freaked out and made a weird crackling almost robotic type sound like when you call a fax machine or whatever, kinda like when you used to log onto aol, that type of sound, then nero crashed and errored out.

Now when I play any video file on WMP or Winamp they have that sound weird crackling sound. Ventrilo is now muffled to the point that I can barely hear people, games for instance Warcraft3 Are making the same crackling sound, almost all programs with audio are suffering the same problem.

I've tried uninstalling my sound drivers and reinstalling them.
I uninstalled nero and AnyDvd - No dice.

I also installed : AnyDvd, Gspot and Convert toDvd.

It's driving me to insanity , I simply can't fix Any help would BE GREATLY apreciated.

Have you either tried different speakers and/or earphones to be certain this isn't a hardware problem?

Yes I've tried that, I'm certain Its a hardware/software/Corruption of data.

However I'm not advanced enough to pinpoint the issue.

    Please Please PLEASE help someone.

Like I said, It happened ALL OF THE SUDDEN.
I pressed the play button on nero, then nero froze and crashed and mucked up my sound.

And trust me I've been up ever since, searching google for people with similar issues almost 90% of the time I can troubleshoot my own issues, so you must understand how absolutely frustrated I am.

    Those are three different things.
Hardware in this case would be speakers or sound card
Software would drivers or the program you use to play the audio file.
Corruption of data would indicate that a single sound file had been damaged.

    You stated that:
That eliminates data corruption of an individual audio file and that this is not a problem with a specific audio player.

Now you say that you have tried alternative speakers.
You also said you have reinstalled your sound drivers

    That leaves sound card.

First, where did you get the avi?
If it was a torrent, some fakes are filled with weird noise to make them look larger in size and some contain malware.
I would do some Malware scans looking for signs of an infection and if found visit these good folks here: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showpost.php?p=664939&postcount=2
Follow all the directions in the Read Me and have them take a look at your logs.

If Nero crashed, it may have left a crash log. If I remember right, it does that. That may give you a hint.
Also, try reinstalling your codecs and DirectX to make sure there is no corruption there.

Check Device Manager for any signs of driver problems. Start with a reinstall of your motherboard chipset drivers. Then make sure you completely remove your sound driver through an uninstall and then re-install them, after a reboot

I've seen a couple of posts of problems similar to your crackling and muffling and saw a weird solution and I have no idea why it worked for the posters. The solution was to uninstall the IDE drivers and then reinstall them.

    What Are IDE drivers.

and how do i completely remove all my audio codecs?
I can't through device manager it doesn't give me that option.

I already completely uninstalled my sound drivers and reinstalled AFTER a reboot.

I already uninstalled Nero, therefor I don't think there is a crashlog for it still on my computer.

The IDE ATA/Atapi drivers have to do with your hard drive controllers. You can find them in Device Manager with that name.
Your Audio Codecs can be updated by installing a new Codec pack. You can find them here: Multimedia
There are several different packs, K-Lite being one of the more popular ones.
    I like this one, http://www.majorgeeks.com/Codec_d5118.html
Nero may have left some remnants behind. Look in Programs, Common Files, and in your User files for Nero or Ahead. Look for files ending in .log

    @ Scott.... not THAT? LOL

So uninstalling the IDE drivers won't cause me to lose data or anything?
And how do I go about reinstalling them? Where do you get IDE drivers from?

Also, I'm REALLY new to the forums, The link you gave me for the codecs labeled multimedia. Sent me to a bunch of downloads, I wouldn't know which specific one to download. And the Link you said "I like this one" is broken.

This is frustrating me beyond belief, the way audio files, and videos files sound is so odd. Music makes a weird like In and out type sound like up and down, yet muffled and distorted slightly. And videos make a weird fax machine type sound, but its like really bad, like when the robot hacks the airplane in transformers, thats the only way I know how to describe it.

And movies online are muffled to the point that they are almost unhear able.

I can't hear anyone talking in ventrilo (Voice communication program)
Which is a major issue because I have a CoD4 Cal match soon.

Just an update, I downloaded the most recent version of K-Lite, and installed them, rebooted, and still no dice.

If you have a Windows installation disk, click Start, Run... and type "sfc /scannnow" without the quotes. That has been known to fix a myriad of issues.

Also, after I installed the k-lite pack.
My online videos seem to be like pixilated, I can see pixel tearing and stuff, like its kinda blurry.

Also all online videos are sooooo quite, along with most other apps.

When I do the sound test on Realtek HD audio it sounds normal, as it did before this issue.

Have you tried using System Restore to go back to a date before the issues started?
