Really odd Mouse (?) Issue hinders ability to play my games

I am not sure where this should go so if it needs to be moved, please do so.

I play several online games and a number of them installed on my computer. These games involve exclusively the use of "point and click" mouse movements.

Here is the issue: I click and the attendant "red X" flashes several times. Now mind you I have only clicked once and certainly am not double clicking in any way, form or fashion. If I right click to open a menu and click on the item I want the red X flashes and goes to a yellow x and whatever I wanted to do halts and something else happens.

I have been told by the folks that play these games with me that this is called "lag" but not one seems to be able to tell me how to fix it. This is not lag in the sense of Oh, the page is loading slowly, but in the sense that a click results in something odd happening that is not supposed to occur. Not so good with combat games at all! :-D

I hope that I have described this problem well enough that someone can tell me how to solve the issue or at least where to start looking for a solution.

 

Have you tried a different mouse? Does this weird mouse problem happen with just regular (non-gaming) PC use?

 

Yes, Hubby and I have traded mouses (mice? Meece?) and the problem does still occur. And yes, I had the same problem both with Word - Trying to higlight, and Excel. We've update the software and done everything we can think of to try. When I've asked on the gaming boards, folks are very aware of the problem but no one seems to have a solution.
