My new Compaq Presario SR1850NX has been a big string of problems. First, this stupid ccApp thing from Norton was making my shutdown time like two minutes. I installed a patch from the HP site which fixed it, but for some strange reason it set my video card to run as a normal PCI card, and disabled my soundcard. Now I've fixed that, but now my computer is running incredibly slow. When I go to Performance with all unecessary programs closed down and my computer sitting idle, the CPU usage is in the high 70-80's. The biggest process is DiscGui, but thats only taking up 9,000... I'm sick of the Compaq support, they all just tell me to reinstall drivers instead of anything that actually fixes my problem.

    Help me please!

Try those Tim pointed out, they are a must, once those are done, download this and run it, fix everything BUT the 'Startup Programs' some are important.

Other than that this tool really is amazing I ran it last night with no problems, my rig is like it's never been before even when I bought it lol, plus it's Free, it fixes everything.

So yeah run this tool afterwards, pretty much speeds everything up and rids of unwanted stuff also.

It's not that my computer is slow because I haven't defragged, it's only a month old. There's something there that's eating up my CPU usage. When I show kernels in Performance, it's always in the red, but there's only a small green bar at the top, so if I could find a way to take down the kernal usage I'd be back to normal...

New development! I looked at my Processes and it looked like I had ISASS, which turned out to be LSASS. But compared to my dad's computer, where his stays constant, my LSASS is constantly changing it's memory consumption (always around 1,100) and the I/O reads go up by ~400 every second. In the 30-40 minutes my computer has been running, it's at 1,312,400something.

    Any ideas?

I know this is from several months ago, but I'm having the same problem on the same machine I bought in the summer. Process Explorer shows the CPU usage from hardware interrupts (~80% constantly). Found anything yet? I was going to take mine to Micro Center for warranty work.

Go under MSconfig (Run>type msconfig), got to startup and disable any that you know you don't use, if you don't know what one does it is best to leave it alone. go to services under msconfig window and make sure that Windows Audio is selected. Run CCleaner like said above, scan for issues and spyware, make sure to back up all issue changes. If this doesn't help the processor than go to right click my com>advanced>performance settings>virtual memory> boost it up to about 25% or your hdd but do not, i repeat do not cross the amount of free space you have.

Micro Center verified this was a hardware issue, not software. They're not sure if it's the motherboard or CPU and can only replace the motherboard themselves; CPU replacement requires sending the PC back to Compaq for whatever reason.

oddlawngnome, I recommend calling Compaq support if you're still under warranty. They seem very willing to help and even questioned why I took my PC into Micro Center for service (uhh, because they're an authorized Compaq svc ctr??) Anyway, good luck to both of us!

Micro Center also found the DVD burner couldn't even read a disc, so I'm going to pressure them to replace the whole PC rather than apply band-aids.
