Really Slow PC

First here are my pc specs:

    HP Pavilion All-in-One PC
    OS- Win7 home premium
    Processor- AMD Athlon(tm) II X2 250 1.60GHz
    Ins. Mem - 4.00 (GB) (3.75GB usuable)
    64 bit OS

I went through removing malware with the help of chalsang.
My pc is running slower than when it had the malware. Everything loads slow from the time I turn it on until I turn it off. Trying to open a window in google chrome or IE takes what seems like forever. I have updated my pc and run ccleaner on a normal basis (which also is loading and running slow).

    I have cleanmem installed and it is showing;
    mem total - 3.75 gb
    commit total - 1.56 gb

I was thinking about running a program to permanently delete files already deleted but thought I'd best ask someone who would know better than me.
This isn't an old pc and I'm beyond frustrated at the slowness. Any help ya'll can offer to me is tremendously appreciated.

If it were me, I would run chkdsk /r first. In the past I noticed that some malware removal programs have side effects like slowness. chkdsk seems to resolve some of this.

If I had a W7 Home installation disk (not recovery disk) and if chkdsk /r didn't resolve the slowness, I would run SFC /SCANNOW. Actually, you can run SFC /SCANNOW even without the installation disk. Sometimes these fixes don't require an installation disk, and these will complete even if you don't have one...

Hi AtlBo, ok, I've run chkdsk and the SFC/SCANNOW. I decided to wait before posting back to see if it helped which unfortunately it has not. I'm not 100% sure the sfc/scannow actually ran. When I clicked it, a black box poped up but was gone in the blink of an eye. I really don't understand why this pc of mine is moving so incredibly slow. It is actually slower now after the malware removal than before. Is there any thing else I can do to try and help?

OK...SFC /SCANNOW is run from a command prompt. Make sure to add the space before the /. Fairly certain it didn't run.

To open command prompt, Start button->Run->type the word command in the box and hit enter on your keyboard. Then type in at the end of the line there SFC /SCANNOW. You may need an XP Home installation disk.

    Post back how that goes

deegazzo is running Windows 7, so cmd.exe needs to be elevated.
    • Click on the Start button.
    • Type cmd at the bottom of the menu where it says 'Search programs and files'
    • Right click on cmd.exe and 'Run as administrator.
    • Type sfc /scannow at the command prompt, then press enter.

ah...thanks. Just got my first W7 PC a couple of weeks ago. I have worked with W7 a fairly good bit, but never done any troubleshooting.

I saved some money and bought an old dual core w/W7 64 bit that has a motherboard that will support up to the first series of quad cores :), but it only has 1 GB of RAM :(. It has a great 650w power supply, so I would like to upgrade (graphics card too) when I get $200 or so. For now, I will be using this i3 XP machine, which I honestly really like very much truth be known.

    Appreciate the information...

    1. What is the size of your hard drive?
    2. What is the size of either the free space or the used space on the hard drive?
    3. Open CCleaner, click on Tools in the left pane. Then click on Startup in the middle pane. Down at the bottom right is a button, "save to a text file". Click that and post the file as an attachment to your post here so we can see what is loading at startup.

Ok, I've re-run the sfc /scannow and it said it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. I have the cbs.log file. I was going to attach that log here for you but, it is not allowing me to, says I need to contact an administrator which I am on my pc. The startup log is attached.

Size of my HD - capacity - 286 GB
    used space - 39.0 GB
    free space - 247 GB

The problem is not hard drive space. You don't have many items loading at startup but I do see two that can be disabled: CCC and Java update scheduler.
CCC is your video controls. You can always get to the video control through the Control Panel if you want to change something. Since video isn't tweaked too often, it's a waste of resources to have that load every time windows starts.
As far as Java, because it is a vector for malware, I only have it installed on one of the 8 computers currently in our home. I also have it disabled. The updates come about every 3 months with the newest on April 16th. Again, I check manually instead of wasting resources by having it check daily when windows loads.

There is one I need to find out what it is HP odometer. That's one I've never seen.

I think you can disable HP odometer.

Within task manager, do you have a process that is eating your ram? or CPU? If we can get that, then we can help you.
