Realtek Audio driver doing my head in, any help appreciated

I have read all the other threads regarding this bastard of a driver, and still cannot get audio on my old Gateway PC.

I don't even know how to get my extremely lengthy Everest report on here - tried cutting and pasting but would be here till Christmas holding down the keys to copy it all. Am just about at the point of banging my head repeatedly off the computer desk.

Had to restore factory settings after getting Total Security virus, and now have no sound on this old but otherwise perfectly good Gateway 520GB.

Downloaded and installed Microsoft UAA function driver for Realtek 880
Downloaded and installed correct Realtek driver according to Gateway support
On reboot keep getting blue screen _IRQL_NOT_LESS etc error message
In safe mode uninstalled Realtec and tried again
Last time in safe mode Realtek does not show up in programs but system will not start normally
In safe mode opened device driver, shows Realtek Driver, and Code 10
Disabled driver as this is the only way to get rid of blue screen and normal Windows start up

Have been going round and round in circles all day installing/uninstalling different drivers, all of which result in blue screen on second reboot and then safe mode removal.

Any advice appreciated

Ok, this time :

I installed both as advised. (Installs, reboots, finds new hardware, asks to reboot.) This time on second reboot, (I usually immediately get the blue error screen) I hear the speakers kick in, with just one crackle. Get a blank screen for at least five minutes, then this time it fires up as normal and I have the windows home screen. However, still no sound, no windows sounds etc.

Into Device Drivers and yellow triangle/exclamation mark over realtec Audio and Code 10 (device cannot start) Print screen attached. (Note : you will see I have lots of these yellow triangles. The system restore screwed up some ports and my ethernet connection too - will tackle these when I have sound!)

Troubleshooting the driver in Device Manager gets me nowhere as before

Any more help or ideas gratefully appreciated

(Now have Chipset, Windows UAA and Realtek Driver. Should I uninstall UAA?)

I don't know how to disable the UAA. (Microsoft UAA function driver) I can't even find it now on my system, and don't even know what it is was named when I downloaded it . When I go into Device Drivers, I can only see one driver - the Realtek Driver.

Thanks - but I think I am just going to forget it. Three full days trying to sort it out and I am at the end of my rope and totally confused with all the different drivers etc.

Actually, I had one last try.

I found the UAA in System drivers. Stupidly I didnt read your instructions again uninstalled it instead of disabling it - and immediately computer crashed and got the old blue screen.

Will try again following your instructions.

I would download and install this chipset driver first. It will know if it needs to install anything additional or not.
