HP Pavilion desktop, Windows Vista home premium service pack 2, 32 bit.
Had a Radeon Video Card fail, after removing video card I have been having all sort of problems with Realtek HD Audio.
I have sound on rare occasions but audio manger keeps detecting things being plugged in or unplugged even though they are not.

My original solution was to plug a headphone into front panel and for some reason the speakers started working. This lasted a few months but now it seems Realtek Audio has totally freaked out.

    Please help a member.

My first inclination would be to go to HP's website and download/reinstall the Realtek audio driver for your model. This may solve the problem.

Did you replace the video card with a new one or are you using onboard video? If using a new video card, go to the chipset mfr's website (nvidia.com or amd.com for ATI) and be sure you have the most up to date driver. If using onboard video, download and reinstall the OEM driver at HP's website.

If both of these options fail, you might want to consider purchasing an inexpensive sound card to replace the integrated Realtek audio.

    Hope this helps. :)

    Went to this web page:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&softwareitem=ob-48553-1

    This is what was downloaded:
    Description
This package contains the Realtek High-Definition Audio Driver for the supported notebook models and operating systems.

    PURPOSE: Routine

    Release details
    Released:2007-04-04

    Version:1.00 B
    Compatibility:
    Microsoft Windows Vista
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit)
    Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit)
    Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit)
    Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit)
    Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (32-bit)
    Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (64-bit)
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit)
    Microsoft Windows Vista Business (64-bit)
    Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit)
    Fix/Enhancement:
Provides drivers to support 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System.

During restart I got a message indicating it may not have installed correctly and was given 2 options. Install using recommended settings OR driver installed correctly. Not knowing which was the proper course I continued with restart without choosing either option.

That done, I still have no audio but I did notice that in the Realtek HD Audio Manager that 5 of the 6 back panel jacks for speakers have dissappeared. Only the blue one labeled speaker out is still there now. Before when speakers worked i was connected to the green jack (which should be speakers) but no longer exists.
Also the front panel mic jack disappeared but not the headphone jack. I also have both digital in/out.

I did not replace failed video card using onboard video.

Try reinstalling the Realtek driver. When you get the "this may not have installed correctly" message, choose "reinstall with recommended settings" option and see it it solves the problem.

If not, the onboard audio may be flaky. You may need to install a new sound card such as this:

Went back to web page and ran through the same process again except during restart there were not 2 options, it simply restarted.

I think the only way I will see the option to install using recommended settings (from the download) will be for me to hit a restore point from a few days ago then download again.

Prior to starting this thread I did open the recovery manager then advanced options and chose "reinstall hardware drivers that came with your computer".
Wouldn't this have done the same thing as the download?

Ok. i went ahead and hit a restore point then downloaded and chose the option to "reinstall with recommended settings" and after restart i had the same result as discribed before.

First off, Restore can screw things up more than fix things, if you do not know what you are doing. Second, it is not going to fix a hardware issue.

Since you have determined that it does not work after changing drivers, that leaves, trying a Ubuntu LiveCD/DVD to see if sound will playback through the device.

If it doesn't, that pretty much means the chipset is dead, and your only other choice, is to install a PCI-e card, if you do not have a laptop or netbook, otherwise, you can use a USB soundcard.

Well Sir i have no idea what a Ubuntu LiveCD/DVD is.
When the video card failed it overheated and i suppose it could have created a hardware issue with the onboard audio.
Seems like the fix for this desktop PC is a sound card as was suggested earlier would you agree?

A Live CD/DVD is exactly that. It is a Operating System that runs off the CD/DVD, without installing on the hard drive. As for your problem, if the system overheated and caused chipset failure, yes looks like you have a issue. Problem with most motherboards if you ever want to replace this one, is finding the right one that will fit in the case.

There would be no problem putting in an external soundcard, or USB sound device. As for your Speccy file, you left your Windows key in it, before uploading.

Bought a new sound card and that solved the problem.
After searching various forums it seems Realtek HD Audio is a piece of junk.

You are going by opinionated statements. Only way to decide if something is not right or wrong, is by making your own decision, not by going by the words of others on the Internet. Realtek has actually come a long way from the older stuff, and even then, they gave Creative a run for their money on their low end stuff back in the day.

Unless you are doing professional sound production, just go with what your wallet can afford.
