I have the same problem but the circumstances are slightly different:
I have a fresh installation of Windows XP Pro SP3 v.3300 with all the updates as of today, the problem is with the sound. I cannot install/uninstall the sound drivers (I have in another partition a Windows XP Pro SP2 and this has been installed ok and is working fine, so it's not a hardware problem) I installed all the drivers from the manufacturer (mo-bo: GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L (rev. 1.0)) and also look for the latest version from guru3D.com (Audio Driver Setup (2.58) R1.92) and evrything runs good but when I restart the system says "no audio device" when I uninstall pops-up a warning window "Realtek HD Audio driver Remove Failure!" and then the setup continues until the restart window.
When I restart I re-install the drivers all goes well and I reboot as it says but when I restart
no audio at all. what can I do?

    Re: Realtek hd driver failure!!!

These steps should unload the driver and get it to uninstall, then install fully.

Reboot into your BIOS and disable the onboard audio.
Boot into Safe Mode and go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the Realtek audio drivers.
Reboot back into safe mode. Go to Device Manager, in the menu (at top), select View/Show Hidden Devices and delete any of the Audio/Multimedia devices.
Reboot back to safe mode. Make sure the devices aren't listed.
Reboot again to BIOS and enable the onboard audio.
Boot into Windows and cancel the Hardware Wizard.

UAA HD AUDIO DEVICE SUPPORT IN WINDOWS XP SP3
This patch is required before any of the HD device drivers are installed
    1. On your PC change the CSDVersion registry key to XP SP2:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=200
    2. Restart your PC
    3. Install KB888111xpsp2.exe http://couponmeister.com/blog/HD_Audio/kb888111xpsp2.exe
    4. Change the CSDVersion key back to XP SP3 again:
    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Windows\CSDVersion value=300
    5. Restart your PC, finalize configuration of your PC, sysprep and capture.

Now try installing this Realtek HD driver:
