Reboot on shutdown and Systray icons can't be hidden

When I went to start up my computer (HP Pavilion 750n, 768 MB RAM, 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor) yesterday, there was no power. I took it to the local repair shop. The tech said it was the power supply again (the second one I've had in 6 months). He replaced it with a non-HP power supply. It boots up and all the programs are functioning, but when I do the START>SHUT DOWN>SHUT DOWN, it just reboots (the tech mentioned that he noticed it did that, but couldn't offer any reason for it other than we had a lightning storm which could have affected it). I did some investigating and found a work around for this (right click on MY COMPUTER>PROPERTIES>ADVANCED tab>STARTUP and RECOVERY SETTINGS>unchecked AUTOMATICALLY RESTART under SYSTEM FAILURE). I'm still concerned about why the icons in the SYSTRAY can't be hidden now. What could have gone wrong with my computer and anyone have any advice on how to restore normal functionality?

Hi

The PSU failure "could" have affcted some other hardware, maybe motherboard, but also could have corrupted some system files, so guessing you have XP is to open a command prompt and type sfc /scannow and see if the scan fixes anything.

If you right click the Taskbar and choose Properties is the Hide Inactive Icons box checked? if is is then uncheck it then reboot, then recheck it and reboot and see if icons can be hidden and stay hidden (use the customize option next to Hide Inactive Icons) or try the below to erase the IconStreams as in Tray Icons

Do only try this if using Windows XP as the location in Vista and Windows 7 is differnet.

Open Regedit ( goto Start > Run and type regedit and hit enter )
Locate the registry key location HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\TrayNotify and right click the folder and choose Export ( this will backup that location for you )

then Delete the two values ( again right click each of them and choose delete ) IconStreams and PastIconsStream once deleted hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and look for explorer.exe in the Processes Tab and click it and choose End Process ( at this point it is perfectly normal for your taskbar and all desktop icons to disapear )

then with the Task Manager still open click the top menu option of New Task (Run...) and in the Open box type explorer and hit enter. Then when you check the Customize Notifications they will all be gone (apart from some running ones) best bet is to restore all your actual running tray processes is to re-boot.
