Is it necessary? What, exactly does it do? Free up memory? My desktop, and I assume most others, goes to sleep after about an hour. Press any key and it's ready in a few seconds (SSD).

Rebooting does free up memory but it also activates all drivers and updates the OS Needs (ie. Widows Updates) so rebooting is quite important.
