    Hi folks

I attempted my first complete rebuild, which I think went ok but I cant seem t o get a signal to the monitor, I replaced the card and have tried swapping the ribbons from hdd to different spots (I dunno I thought that might do something!). Can anyone give me some tips that might help??:cry

    Thanks in advance.

Did you connect the pc speaker? Do you have one?

if you can and have one hook it up. Bios beeps are helpful to determine whats wrong.

    Hi pclover
Thanks for the quick reply, I don't think it has 1 unless it is hidden in the front panel but no I am pretty sure ther isn't 1 there.

http://www.rainbow-software.org/images/hardware/pc_speaker_burn.jpg it looks something like this. IT has a black plug and may have a yellow and black wire.

What happens when you turn the pc on? Do the fans spin etc.

    EDIT:

I didn't' realize but that a burned pc speaker :-D

    Hi again

:-o Yep it does have a speaker (never knew what it was till I looked at it) and when I turn on the fan starts and it sounds like the hd boots or starts to boot. I reconnected the speaker and it gives a long beep on start up (about 3 seconds then nothing for say 5 seconds then another beep for 3 etc....

The speaker is just a little black thing not like a real speaker that just beeps on start up or when you press the wrong key etc.

    Does this help?

    Cheers

Looking online it could be a memory problem.

I would pull the ram out and reinstall it.

Just a thought if i weren't getting a signal to my monitor the first thing id check is for lose connections, lose video card, last id swap from the video card to the on board video and see if the problem still persists.

    Hi 3ntity

Thanks 4 the advice I tried all those things, even changed vid card but no luck, it's weird because the screen makes a sound as if it is connected but just not getting a signal.

    Thanks again,

    Cheers

Ok so you don't get bios or anything right?? Ive had problems like this before but it was because my on board video was blown and pci not enabled, i had to pull a few things and put them back in before the pci card was detected; you probably have a different problem though. Just keep postin back with your progress and these guys should be able to help you figure it out. good luck.

I just keep trying this and that, changing cards, leads, ribbons, ram etc, hopefully something will give and away it will go. thanks to all for the advice every clue is one step closer to the solution! :)

Right - repeated long beeps indicate it could be a memory problem . . . what BIOS is your computer using? Or what make and model is the motherboard?

Since you have changed video cards it seems doubtful both would be bad . . . did either require hook-up to the computer's power supply?

    Hi

Just double check that all rhe power cables are plugged in as mist modern cpus need the 4pin 12v power plugged in also, but do give us some specs to your pc as in motherboard and cpu

also i have noticed thiz a few times when building pcs is to pop out the mothdrboard battery (small coin one) for 10mins and then replace, this just resets the bios

    Hi Spad
The motherboard is asus pentium3, no direct hookup from power supply to the vid card, could the problem be with one of the other drives not working as this was the reason I changed motherboards, all monitors connected to the computer before the rebuild refused to work after 1 that was working just suddenly stopped. I have swapped everything in the computer except the A: drive and CD rom. It is very weird!

    Thanks for your advice.

    Hi Halo
Thanks I will try the battery removal/replacement and the board is Asus/pentium 3. I'm pretty thick when it comes to bios and all that but all the wires seem to be plugged in.
