Rebuild without reinstalling software

This is what happened:
I updated my mates PC for him and as a result it died so I used the Windows CD to recover the system but it didn't work so I performed a fresh install. The problem is theres no backup but I have copied all the files off using Knoppix, and I would like to know how to put the programs back on without reinstalling them?
I was thinking xcopy all the files onto the refreshed system and trying a system repair?
