Rebuilding a laptop...

I have a Medion Cad2000 MD42595 laptop which is out of order. The screen is broken, and Medion customer service tells me it will cost about 6000,- Nok (Around 850 $ US) to replace it. Most of the expences was for the screen itself, while the rest is for mounting it. They also told me that it requires special equipment to mount it, and the screen also must be tightened after specific standards so that the LCD don`t get destroyed. So far so bad...

I am not going to put that much money into this laptop. But I have another thought about what to do with it. And that is to take all parts (mainboard and its belongings, harddisk, dvd-rw ++) from this laptop and mount it in a laptop- cabinet with an excisting and functional LCD-screen ; perhaps another brands cabinet. I think I will look for a used laptop for sale which has a functional LCD-screen, but no other parts.

The questions I have before starting my quest is:
First of all that the new cabinets LCD- screen will work with my mainboards ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, 128 MB DDR RAM (Lcd-specs are: 17 inch, WXGA, 1440x900). Thinking of what customer service told me about standards for mounting the screen I am somewhat conserned about this also. I have no specific knowledge of LCD- screens...
The next is that I need to find a cabinet that my motherboard fits in (39.5 cm wide, 28 cm deep and 2.8 cm high (measured without the heightbuild of the screen) ).

Are there anyone out there with experience in such a project? I would gladly hear from you:) Should I try this out, or should I just sell it as a laptop with some functional parts?

PS. I have searched the "entire" internet for used (and partially malfunctional) laptops of this model, without luck. Also I cannot find spareparts for this laptop either, except from Medions own company though..

Why not just use an external monitor and be done? ed

Sometimes you've gotta bite the bullet and buy a new laptop.
USD$850 will probably get you a good laptop, with modern specifications, although not as good as your specs, after re-reading your first post.

I tried google searches for you, on Medion, but the results were not much of a help, as you have probably already tried, as well. Bazza

Okay you may find these links of use for the disassembly of laptops. As the author states the guides can be used "generically" to fix most laptops (if your make and model aren't listed (tons of pics):

The 2nd 1 may interest "Replace LCD display or repair backlight problem"

Good luck. To often the techs will talk up the difficulty of the problem so they can charge liked a wounded bull.

    Thanks for useful links.
Perhaps the only thing I need to know, is wether other manufacturers Lcd-screens will fit on my Medion. But one thing regarding that matter, is if different (laptops) mainboard/ vgacard/ psu will deliver different voltages to the Lcds. If so, I must find a Lcd-screen from another manufacturer, built for handling voltages that my Medions mainboard, psu and vgacard delivers. Any ideas anyone?

    Thanks again

    Tom
