I need to replace hardware components and I have not been keeping up with the latest products. There are so many recommendations out there - don't know who to trust.

I had Win XP, I need to install Win7 and my motherboard is not compatible.

    Please help, thank you.

    Start Low AMD,

Ok so this is really simple :)...

goto www.newegg.com Once there do a search for what you think you need to replace. First off the mobo is not supported by WIN 7, which I am kinda shocked to hear about that. So do a search on Motherboards and really any mobo will do if you have no preference.

Now, What CPU do you current use, what socket does your board have, what type of memory are you using and what kind of hard drives do you have like are they IDE only ? or SATA/SATA II. Once you change your board everything changes.

By the way are you running AMD or INTEL ? :)

Thanks for your response.. bare with me.. I will get everything for you. I realize changing out my board will change everything.

I'm not completely familiar with all the terms.. but here it goes

Currently have 2 computers.. will start with RDX200 MB until we make a decision.

    MB: LanParty RDX200
Socket: 939 (would like to reuse)
HD's: 3 - able to use SATA's on all (with cables I have)
Currently running AMD (would like to stay with AMD)
    (2) 1G memory & (2) 512's (?)

How do I determine the CPU I am running?

Yesterday, my video card blew out, replaced it with a spare I had around here but it is not compatible with the MB/win xp, but had no other way to connect monitor to system to do repairs. MSI NX6200TC ... so, I will also need to get a win7 / new MB compatible video card also.

    Thanks again

There is a GIGABYTE MOBO I was going to suggest that supports AM2/AM2+ and DDR2 :)

It is the Mobo that I have on my other computer, but I cant see to find it on Newegg, so let me just link it to you. From there, find what components you want to add to the board, it really is a GREAT board very good man. I used it to over clock my Tri-core from freaking 2.2 Ghz to freaking 3.3 Ghz Stable and never looked back O_O that board rocks face!!!

Find this mobo and start a fresh build, as to save you money cause the Tri-Cores are SUPER cheap and I believe it supports quad-core chips too so its a good bargain. As far as you other components I just got for Names really. I like Corsair, Thermaltake,OCZ, Kingston, Rosewill. Just head on over to Newegg its really easy man :)

    Hi

Socket 939 is sadly way out of date, though I did run Windows 7 on a socket 939 machine... I'd recommend just starting from scratch for a whole new system, though.

If you build an entirely new system, you will need a new case, as cooling requirements have changed a lot over the last several years. You'll need a new power supply, new motherboard, new RAM... likely a new hard drive and DVD drive.

What do you use the computer for? Also, what could you budget for a new PC?

I dont know if rlevans is coming back, but if he does, I just want to point out that when choosing system components, always remember you get what you pay for. There are a lot of cheap components out there that are poor quality. Please research, look at reviews from reputable sites NOT THE VENDORS (CNET is always good) . You can get burned by thinking you are getting a good deal on, say, a hard drive, when you are getting poor quality stuff with high failure rate.
    Three rules :
    1: Research
    2: Research
    3: Research

    Good luck !

Thanks guys.. yes, that is why I am here.. checking to see if my stuff is toooo outdated to use anything....

Yes, I know research is the #1 things.. thanks for the recommendation...

I have a 650 watt PS... that should be ok for a new computer..

I will keep an eye on this thread..

    Thanks again.

It is old gear but some of the comments above don't seem to realise the name "DFI" being bleeding edge in it's day!

Here is a nice breakdown on the mobo:

It was the best 10 years ago but to upgrade components on it would cost "significantly more" than starting again.
