Hey guys. I just want some cool programs on my computer. I'm not just talking about Ad-Aware and Spybot. I'm talking about any cool progfram at all. For, example I tried the Stat Bar amd it was pretty cooler, but I don't think I'm going to use it anymore. Since there are so many programs on this site I was hoping you guys tell me which ones you guys like and have. I don't really care what the function of the program is, as long as it just makes my computer more dynamic. And btw please reccomend free programs because I'm not one for paying for downloads. So what do you guys have?

You might like CursorXP I use the "bubblegum" package (see below) but there's plenty of other cool cursor stuff in the app.

Wanna get rid of most of the icons on your front page and not have to remember keyboard shortcuts try Slick Run.

I have 130+ alpha shortcuts on my PC. It features auto complete so you don't usually have to type more than 2-3 characters. Most used prog on my laptop. Bazza

Hey thanks guys. I dowloaded all the programs, except Editpad classic, it was no longer avaliable.http://majorgeeks.com/vb/images/smilies/frown.gif

However, I do have some questions for some of the programs.

I've played around with them and there are some things I don't get. I know I'm gonna sound like a newb with some of these questions, but oh well.

Ok, acejones, I'm not sure what the fuction of the Dock is. I notice that I can put some of my desktop icons on there and some times it will try to combine 2 programs or something. It has me confused. What do you use it for?

Robo, when would some one use the program PC inpspector?

Btw, BillH, the XP Cursor is so cool. I use the default one which is still better than the one my comp came with.

Bigbazza, I was playing around with the Slick Run and it has tasks like shut down, weather and quit. I was wondering is there was a way I can program it so that I can assign the word "mail" to my specific e-mail inbox.

It would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help this newb out right here and since you guys gave me some recomendations I guess I can tell you guys about my favorite browser. I'm sure you guys have all heard about Fire Fox 0.9. it runs faster than IE and I like all the extensions (add ons) avaliable for it.

    Re: Recommended Programs

    Hi Mr D.,

I have over 130 "MagicWord shortcuts" as I mentioned.
From your startup screen, right click on almost any icon.
Left click on properties and it will show under Target the path to that program.
Cut, as in Cut and Paste, the path, without the quotes. Don't paste yet !!

Go to the Slick Run box, wherever you have set it up.
Right click on the box, it will display a drop down box, select New Magic Word.
Delete Unnamed and type in MAIL, or whatever you want to call it.
Click on "File name or URL" and paste in the path that you previously "Cut".
Click on "Start mode" if you want to open it up in Maximised window for example.
Click on "test this magic word". It will either work or it won't. TRy all steps again if it doesn't work.
If it works, it will say "it looks like it works".
Click on green tick in upper right of screen. Click on Export, bottom right, then Export again on next screen and it will allow you to save all MagicWords to wherever you wish. I save mine to My Documents with the filename "Slick240604" or whatever the date is, or "Slick062404" in Yankee format.

    For example
    CL= C:\program Files\Cleanup!\Cleanup.exe
    X = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe

You only need to type in X and press enter to go straight to Excel
You can even specify a particlar spreadsheet if you want to.

MG=C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe\mg.xls takes me to my database of MG threads that I keep for future reference.

Hope this is clear. It is easier to do then explain in writing. I tried to post my MagicWords but I can't find how to do it in this reply. Maybe someone can put me right on this, for future occasions.

Private Message me on Yahoo if it is not clear or reply here. Bazza

Thanks, bigbazza, I understand now. I'm just now have to make my short cuts to my my frequently used programs and websites.

Robo, it's ok. I think my normal notepad will serve my just fine anyhow.

Drizzt240. I think you will grow to love it's savings in time and mousing and typing. An added bonus is that you can delete the shortcuts from your front page and clean it up. Doesn't work with every shortcut icon, but with most. Bazza

PS: You can point to folders like My Documents, Drives like A:\, D:\, Z:\ (for my DVD/CD drive), etc. Baz

WinPatrol. It detects programs that are on your startup session, and what programs are currently running. It also lets you kill tasks. Kinda like a sophisticated Ctrl+Alt+Delete. there is are free, and paid version.

Hi D, there are a few I can't get to work properly so have to still have the shortcut icons on the startup screen. Too lazy I guess to really tackle them. One day I guess. Last count was 142 magicWords, today. Wish there was some way to print them out 2 or 3 wide on a page. Being a believer in Pareto I guess 80% of them I will rarely use. Still leaves 30 or so that will be used more or less regularly. In actual fact it boils down to around 10 most used, so the pareto ratio is 93:7 not 80:20. Ah well, they are created and don't take up any screen space and are all in one file. Bazza

PS: Call in a friendly tech on the false premise of some trouble with your PC and see how they get on with no icons on your start up screen, :D he he Baz
