Receiving error 8000ffff when upgrading Vista to SP1

I have a Windows 7 upgrade but apparently it requires that I am running SP1 on this Vista laptop that I am attempting to upgrade.

However, when I try to install SP1, regardless of method (Windows Update, Standalone, etc.) I am getting an error 8000ffff.

Research with Microsoft seems to indicate that there are some Registry keys that need to be removed and a folder (C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution) that should be renamed or removed in order to successfully install SP1.

However, I do not have these Registry keys in my Registry.

So, I guess I am wondering if anyone has a method for getting SP1 to install when they receive this error? Or alternately, is there a way to get Windows 7 upgrade installed without Vista being on SP1, since having this laptop running Windows 7 is the endgame anyway?

try the readiness tool for your specific OS

 

Ran the readiness tool and it installed and ran correctly. Checked the logs it created and both logs showed no errors found.

Yes, did go there. That is the reference to the Registry keys that I mentioned I don't have.

At this point, trying to restore Vista to factory default and then will try to apply SP1.

 

I'll also assume you did the MS fixit? Anyway, good luck with the restore.
