Receiving multiples of incoming emails

For the last few days I have been receiving multiples (triples and quadruples) of all incoming emails into Outlook Express. I have called Verizon, my ISP provider and they said the problem is not from their side, but probably something with Outlook Express. I checked all the settings to be certain I am not saving the email on the ISP server, not breaking up large sized emails, etc. I reinstalled IE 8 which I assume also reinstalled Outlook Express, but the problem continues.
Do you think this a some kind of malware, or a software problem? Do you know how to fix it? Nothing shows up on Spybot, Super Anti-Spyware or Malwarebytes.

    Thanks for your help.

Reinstalling IE 8 will have no affect on this. Your OE is version 6, the last version of OE. Microsoft stopped bundling OE with IE at version 6 of IE. After IE 6, updating IE no longer updated OE to a newer version; it remained at version 6.

Even though Verizon says there's no problem on their end, I'd still log on to your email account via webmail and see whether you can identify any emails that may not be downloading for some reason, perhaps a corrupt or extremely large file. If ALL messages are not fully downloaded when you retrieve email with OE, the messages will not be deleted from the server and will be downloaded again the next time you retrieve mail. So, again, log on to webmail and observe this from both ends (webmail and OE) for awhile. It may give you a clue to the problem.

    Caliban and USAF,

Thanks for your helpful input. I have followed the directions re. renaming the Pop3uidl.dbx file but not sure it's helping. I still receive multiple copies to my Verizon account but not to my gmail account. Would you recommend that I download Windows Live and forget about Outlook Express? I'm not at all familiar with Windows Live.

    Thanks,

    Dear USAF,

I checked Verizon and indeed, there were 3 emails there--the ones I've been receiving multiples of in OE. I deleted them and now let's see what happens. I checked my OE options and the box for leaving messages on the server is unchecked so there should not have been any emails on the Verizon server. Any further suggestions as to why they might be stuck in the Verizon server box?

As a follow-up, I downloaded Windows Live and the same problem happened with the Verizon account. For some reason it is only happening with the Verizon email account and not my gmail account. Any ideas about this?
At this point I have deleted my verizon account from OE and will keep just the gmail account. Hopefully that one will continue to be OK.
Does anyone have a good alternative email client to try?

    Thanks for your help.
