Recently Norton Speed Disk Freezes on my PC??

I can't seem to get Norton Speed Disk to stop freezing my pc. This is a new advent... and of course - my pc seems to be running a bit slower these days. I do have plenty of room on my hard-drive (over 27 gigs remaining). I am running Win XP Pro with a 1.5 p4 processor, 1 gig of RD Ram, and a very frustrated user. Can anyone out there think of why I get only get about 95-98 percent complete in the defrag? My screen goes black and then I am stuck. I must reboot to get my pc to operate again. I do NOT have hybernation set on my pc nor do I have any automatic shutdown. The pc simply freezes. After about 45 minutes my monitor turns off because I do have only the monitor set to do so in the power settings. I should be able to simply move my mouse or tap a keyboard button to make the monitor turn on again. However, the pc (being frozen) does not allow this. Thus, I must hold down my power button on the tower for a good (8) seconds and hope for the best upon restarting. I have gone through this process several times to no avail. I have reviewed my power settings all seems as it was before - when things were running well. I am clueless.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Just out of curiousity, are you using a version of Norton Speeddisk that is specifically for XP? Maybe an older version won't work with XP. If you are using an XP version, then I am lost for suggestions. Bazza
